08/18/09 - Favre’s back, Fred’s pissed

Posted by James in Wales on Aug 18, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Favre's back, Fred's pissed

An annoyed Fred opened the show with the news that, pending a physical, Brett Favre will sign with the Minnesota Vikings and reminded fans that it is the last day that the public can attend Patriots training camp.

The guys talked about the recent training camp activity and how Bill Belichick had been working the players hard in the heat. They also briefly touched on the alleged ‘fight’ at Raiders training camp head coach Tom Cable and defensive assistant Randy Hanson.

The guys talked about the Patriots opening pre-season game against the Philadelphia Eagles and, of course, the debut of Fred’s live blog ‘Kirsch Words’ which unfortunately failed due to the Eagles’ internet connection going down.

Paul talked about Julian Edelman’s punt return for a touchdown and his involvement with the ‘first team’ offense. Andy thought that his previous punt catch with a guy “in his grill” was more impressive considering he dropped several punts in training camp previously.

Andy then brought up some roster moves including the signing of running back Chris Taylor and the trade of Le Kevin Smith to Denver for a draft pick.

They then talked about some mistakes the first team offence made before talking about the depth at tight end and running back that will help cover not having a full back.

After the break the guys talked about the high expectations of the Patriots season before talking about how they look to be changing to a 4-3 defensive scheme. They broke down the differences in the schemes and pondered whether the apparent shift is due to the lack of quality at pass rush.

Fred brought up a special pre-game reception inside The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon featuring Patriots ownership, members of the Nance family, New England Patriots Alumni, including current Patriots Hall of Famers ahead of the induction of Jim Nance and founder Billy Sullivan into the team’s hall of fame.

Fred then read some emails including one from a new listener and one that asked the guys what they did to celebrate their 30th birthdays.

The guys then brought up an “annoying” TV guy that asked Bill about whether the Patriots would appear on Hard Knocks. An email from Miko described his initial thoughts on the appearances of the guys including Paul being an “intimidating guy”.

Fred then read an email from Patriots tailgating legend Barry Inciong providing information about the upcoming tailgate and party for the Denver road game.

Chris with a tian called into talk about the running backs and how Laurence Maroney looks like he still can’t “find the hole” before the guys talked about Gary Guyton.

The guys then briefly discussed the  Brett Favre saga before going back to “Kirsch Words” and how Andy posted some anonymous comments.

Following an email from me (James in Wales), that asked the guys about Chris Baker being pictured wearing a New York Yankees cap in the locker room and promoting the PFW in Progress Fantasy Football (sign up here), Jim in Texas called in to talk about the Patriots’ defensive backs.

The guys then discussed Mike Tomlin allegedly laughing when Wes Welker was hit by Ryan Clark before talking about Paul’s penchant for counting out a season’s worth of q-tips that he will take on the road.

An email from new listener Christian from Denmark reignited the Hottest Women in the World debate before the guys discussed Wes Welker and how he travelled to Philadelphia but didn’t dress.

Politics in Progress

Fred opened the show with a nod to lunchbuyer Mike in Springfield who was in attendance in the studio along with Mike Onge.

Fred then got excited about training camp which is only a week away before the guys then discussed the reports that Jarvis Green said that “this is my last year with the Patriots” before quickly refuting the comments in the Boston Globe.

Fred stated that the group of guys who are on the Patriots defensive line are the “nicest in sports” which drew a laugh from the guys. After ‘advertising’ Patriots Place as a great addition to the fans’ experience of training camp the guys discussed some news from around the league.

The guys then went on to discuss Barack Obama’s “irresponsible” comments in which he said that the Cambridge Police was “acting stupidly” when they arrested black Haravard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. despite admitting he “didn’t have the facts”. Unsurprisingly, Fred was on Obama’s side and the others weren’t. This then led to a long discussion about racial equality.

After a break, Jim in Texas to “talk football” and Carson Palmer’s comments that “Chris Henry is Randy Moss Jr” and Andy previewed his roster rankings in the upcoming issue of Patriots Football Weekly asking Fred his top five. Fred’s choices were Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Richard Seymour, Jerod Mayo and Wes Welker. The guys then discussed potential surprise cuts.

Bryan from Brighton called in to tell the guys not to “do a EEI” and have political discussions before talking about the importance of backups in the Patriots system. The guys then talked about the new guys Shawne Springs, Joey Galloway (who Andy doesn’t like), Patrick Chung and Fred Taylor and how they are looking forward to seeing them at training camp.

Following a few emails, including ones about being a “true fan”, Michael Vick and the ‘Great Debate’  before discussing whether the Patriots were in contention following Brady’s injury last year and playing an emailer’s game over over/under. The guys then discussed the ‘Hottest Women in the World’ again before Paul told of his worry that the weather would be bad for his party tomorrow.

The guys then talked about Fred’s dream about Gino Cappelletti’s “unit” before talking about whether Paul is a “true fan” before John from Dallas called in (after 37 minutes on hold). John quizzed the guys on the Patriots numbers from last year befoe the guys discussed how the Patriots would have favoured in the playoffs last year. John also offered the guys a bbq when the Patriots play Houston before the guys discussed ESPN not reporting on the Ben Roethlisberger rape accusation.

06/18/09 - “Like an egg in a nest”

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 18, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Like an egg in a nest

Today’s show opened with the news that the Patriots signed their fourth-round draft pick Rich Ohrnberger, the offensive lineman from Penn State, and released rookie free-agent linebacker Antonio Appleby. Andy brought up the fact that Vince Wilfork tweeted that he was at this week’s US Open at Beth Page, NY, thanks to a Father’s Day present from his children.

Fred mentioned that he received a Sony e-reader for his anniversary, which Andy asked for an extensive review of. The guys then ragged on Fred for being a gadget freak before Fred discussed his favorite apps for his iPhone. Andy mentioned the news that Comcast New England would be doing a live podcast from the NBA draft.

The guys then discussed Brett Favre’s recent appearance on ‘Joe Buck Live’, if he’d be joining the Vikings and whether he could help them before Paul brought up the Brady for 10 years/undefeated season debate from last week’s show. The guys the argued the point before Chris with a tian called in, following a ribbing from Andy about having a facial, to offer his opinion on wanting to have that undefeated season.

Following a break, Fred brought up the poor weather and how he hasn’t been in the pool yet. Andy quickly asked “Shrinkage?” to which Fred replied “Oh yeah, like an egg in a nest”. Classic Kirsch. Fred then read an email from lunch buyer Cedric in Knottsville (despite not being happy with his sandwich) which concerned Donte’ Stallworth’s 30-day sentence for killing a pedestrian while driving drink and how he deserved more based on Michael Vick’s sentence. The guys discussed both situations before Fred read Cedric’s other question concerning Vince Wilfork’s contract, the potential trade for Derrick Burgess and Larry Fitzgerald (Andy hates Fitzgerald’s father).

Swig called in, in inimitable fashion, to discuss Tuesday’s show, calling it “the greatest show ever”, and to chime in on ‘the’ debate.

06/04/09 - “You are a pussy”

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 4, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

You are a pussy

Following the great new Gilligan’s Island intro from Tree Hugger, Fred opened the show with an apology for his performance on Tuesday’s show blaming Alyssa Milano. Paul told about a visit to his son Will’s school show, in which he sang six songs, and spoke about how several parents came up to him to talk about the NECN show.

The guys quickly touched on Rodney Harrison’s retirement before talking about the NBC conference call officially announcing Harrison and Tony Dungy as analysts. The guys discussed former players who become television analysts before discussing whether Harrison would do anything for Patriots Football Weekly.

Fred then brought up the comments made by the Jets new head coach Rex Ryan about not kissing Belichick’s rings and Tony Dungy calling the Patriots the team of the decade. The guys then discussed Harrison’s Hall of Fame merits, in which they all thought he wouldn’t get in, comparing him to other defensive backs in the Hall and whether his suspension will hurt his chances.

After a discussion about Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett’s almost no-hitter, John in Palm Bay callled in to ask about the Patriots’ All-Time Team before Fred played an mp3 from Mikey Vandalism that discussed Rex Ryan’s comments. Fred then went on a tirade about how the Patriots are “going to pull his pants down and spank him so hard”, “humiliate him as a coach and a man” and “send him home with the something up his you-know-what”.

Tree Hugger called in to talk about his excellent Gilligan’s Island opening and who will fill Rodney Harrison’s shoes in regard to being a go-to guy for the media. The guys discussed at length potential replacements including Adalius Thomas, Shawne Springs and Patrick Chung (when he finishes his rookie season) before discussing where this off-season ranks in Patriots history.

Following a break, the guys questioned the Doctor on why Toyota Tacoma isn’t working the boards before discussing Nikki Cox. Fred then read a few emails that discussed putting Erik “in check”, Vince Wilfork’s absence and the quality of the conference calls. After Andy revealed that he was going to see Billy Joel and Elton John, Fred said “You are a pussy” before Erik called him AC/DC.

Several emails brought up another discussion about Rodney Harrison’s Hall of Fame merits before Craig in North Carolina called in to talk about Fred getting worked up over Rex Ryan’s comments. He also compared Rodney Harrison and current safeties, including Ed Reed, to further the discussion of Harrison’s Hall of Fame merits. This led to another typical Fred and Paul argument over what Ed Reed could do that Rodney Harrison couldn’t and how the Pro Football Hall of Fame is different to other sports.

Fred then played another mp from Stevie H that sung a song for the guys that maybe should have been screened. Andy claimed that this was the “most vulgar show ever”. After further Rodney Hall of Fame discussion the guys discussed the potential 09 Patriots starting lineups with Fred saying Sebastian Vollmer will be starting at right tackle, despite never playing there and only taking reps at left tackle.

An emailer brought up some ideas to promote PFWinProgress including invitation cards before Fred announced that he had a fire at his house. The guys brought up whether this would affect Fred’s annual party and ended the show with possible time changes for next week’s shows.

06/02/09 - Erik’s spelling bee success

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 2, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Erik's spelling bee success

Following a “weak intro”, Fred opened today’s show “pumped” about what the guys said about today’s OTA that held the show up for two hours. Fred then plugged a “great” listener’s mp3 before Andy brought up a forthcoming conference call from Rodney Harrison and that “all signs point towards” his retirement. The guys then discussed Harrison and his Hall of Fame potential before discussing today’s OTA with the general consensus that Brady looked more comfortable and sharper out there.

The guys discussed Richard Seymour, Joey Galloway - who returned punts alongside Wes Welker and Kevin Faulk before Fred asked how the rookies were looking. Paul brought up his “boy” Darius Butler who intercepted a pass to Randy Moss and Andy spoke about how recent sigining Brandon McGowan took a lot of reps.

Andy brought up lunch buyer Mark in Cheddar before the Doctor played a fantastic mp3 from Tree Hugger that “raised the bar” before the guys brought up a thread over at PatsFans.com that discussed the Patriots media coverage. (Make sure you go and give the PFW guys props over at PatsFans.com)

Paul brought up a discussion he had with Shawne Springs about when, as a Washington Redskin, he lost 52-7 to the Patriots. John in LA called in to discuss the PatsFans.com topic and the supposed Patriots ideal linebacker size.

The guys then brought up the lost French airliner in the Atlantic - likening it to Lost before Fred read an email from Paul in London that brought up the re-signing of Tom Malone and BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ practise squad eligibility. After a quick discussion about Stan Van Gundy, Fred read an email from William Berry that offered his casting choices for a Patriots film.

Fred read an email from lunch-buyer Mark in Cheddar who said he thought Andy and Erik were forming a ‘bromance’ which led to a confession from Andy that he felt “feminine” after watching an episode of ‘Jon & Kate Plus Eight’. After Mark’s question about Erik’s kicking competition with Patriots Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, Erik offered a couple of facts about himself that included winning a Spelling Bee.

The guys then discussed what they thought the players felt about OTAs before Fred pondered the thought of removing all the water from the surface of the earth. Fred then played the latest mp3 from Stevie H that took another shot at Erik and asked a question about what the guys would do in charge of the Bills defense in the opening game against the Patriots.

Fred then read some more emails which brought up Wilfork’s absence at the OTAs and Ty Law’s conversation on NFL.com before Steve in Winchester called in to offer some alternatives to the Scalavino-Gostkowski kicking challenge including a push-up contest between Paul Perillo and Patrick Chung. Fred then challenged Andy to a push-up contest before mis-pronounced Yosemite during an email involving a Patriots cap worn by a German mountain climber.

The guys then discussed Eric Alexander and Andy spoke of a humorous OTA moment involving Matthew Slater trying to catch a ball. Andy then brought up the Boston College Linebacker Mark Herzlich who was recently diagnosed with cancer and asked Paul if he thought Herzlich would play again.

Fred read an email from Not So Hot Amy that called out Stevie H’s mp3 and attached a sound clip from Family Guy. Andy spoke about following Mark Cuban on Twitter before an emailer asked about the starting Patriots defense. Andy obviously thought James Sanders would be a starter with Erik joking that Sanders told the Patriots PR department that he was worried about the “guy from PFW” asking for him all the time.

The guys discussed Rodney Harrison’s upcoming conference call and questioned whether he would be retiring before talking about the story that Cleveland Browns coach EricMangini made rookies take a 10 hour bus ride to ‘volunteer’ coach at his high school football camp in Hartford, Connecticut.

The guys quickly discussed the news that the Patriots were developing the first NFL lottery ticket before moving on to discussing astronauts drinking their own urine. After chatting about Paul’s book and American Beauty the guys ended the show with a game of over/under from Oliver in Australia.

Posted by James in Wales on May 21, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Tipp's in the house

After the ‘My Cousin Vinnie’ opening, Fred opened the show talking about the great coverage the guys had of the Patriots OTA before asking the Doctor if they had any new opening sequences. Andy then called out Sawyer for “screwing up the lunch order” before the guys talked about the OTA (organised team activity) they spectated yesterday. They talked about Vince Redd and Shawn Crable, most notably his calfs, and how Kevin O’Connell looks to be improving but not in short yardage situations.

The guys talked about tight ends David Thomas and Alex Smith, who Paul called a “plodder”, before talking about lineman Sebastian Vollmer and the secondary. The guys brought up Tom Brady’s appearance on ‘Patriots Today’ and how some journalists complained about Brady speaking only to a team-run “media” outlet.

An email from Larry the Drunk asked Fred to change his Twitter picture as it made him look like a “sexual predator” before Andy spoke about newly acquired WR Terrence Nunn and questioned if he was blacklisted as he didn’t play last year. Fred brought up the news that Raiders DE Derrick Burgess didn’t show for their OTAs and whether that would fuel the rumours that the Patriots will trade for him.

The guys then discussed at length Michael Vick’s release from jail and if he should be given a second chance and whether the Patriots would take him. They brought up the potential PETA protests that would surround any team that takes a chance on the controversial QB. The guys talked about Vick’s financial situation before Mike in Sharon called in to discuss Vince Wilfork’s contract situation and expressed his disappointment that the Patriots hadn’t agreed a contract extensionwith him.

Following a break Jim in Texas called in to discuss Michael Vick and how he thinks Vick deserves a second chance but any team that brings him in run the risk of having their team upset. Fred then welcomed Patriots legend Andre Tippett who said he’d be able to suit up for one snap a game. Tipp spoke about a community outreach programme he’s working on for the Patriots and broke the news that the organisation could soon be selling Patriots license plates in Rhode Island.

Tipp brought up the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament before Andy asked him about the Patriots current crop of outside linebackers and which ones he think can help ease the loss of Mike Vrabel. He then went on to talk about the traits needed for the outside linebacker position. Paul then asked him if he thought that the requisite size and speed that Bill Belichick demands for the position was necessary, to which he offered personal experience that proved it was. Fred then asked him his thoughts on Willie McGinest who Tipp said was a great player.

Following another break the guys discussed Tippett’s visit and the potential outside linebackers that could step up this year. The Doctor played a funny mp3 email from Gary Grodecki that took a shot at Erik before Fred read an email that initiated a lengthy discussion about Michael Vick and his right to play in the NFL.

Following an email about Brady the guys discussed when they think the QB will retire and whether he will retire as a Patriot. Salt called in to talk about Tom Moore returning to the Indianapolis Colts as a consultant following his retirement due to the NFL pension change and asked whether Dante Scarneccia would be doing the same. The show came to an end following a game of over/under that quickly turned into a talk about whether Fred had a threeway or not that Andy took too far and made himself cry with laughter.

Posted by James in Wales on May 14, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Have you tried fried dough?

Fred opened up promising a “big show” with the announcement that Patriots newly acquired TE Alex Smith would be joining the guys in the studio. The guys then discussed the news that Jason Taylor would be re-signing with the Miami Dolphins which Fred said meant “he chose to retire without a Super Bowl ring”. Andy mentioned a conversation with Andre Tippett who asked if Andy thought Tipp should “suit up”.

Fred welcomed Alex Smith to the show who told the guys how he is settling into New England and how he became a Patriot. He also told the guys that he is looking for somewhere to live and that he had been bowling with Tedy Bruschi, who beat him. Fred asked Smith about Jon Gruden and whether he thought he had something to do with his being here. Andy asked about the complexity of the Patriots offense and whethere he would be comfortable being used in multiple roles.

After a question from Andy about if he’d been confused with the QB of the same name, Smith recalled an incident at the combine when he had to have an MRI due to the other Alex Smith having a back problems. Smith then left the show with a gift of fried dough before the uys took a break.

Following the break the guys discussed Alex Smith’s appearance and how in-studio guests go on to great things. Fred gave a shout out to the Doctor for his good work at last night’s Massachusetts High School Football Combine at Gillette Stadium. Andy brought up Nick Caserio’s comments about the Patriots being happy with the existing outside linebacker core. They discussed Shawn Crable and whether he’s going to star at the position this year.

John in Dallas called in to say how he liked the Alex Smith acquisition and which tight ends would be on the 53 man roster before Andy brought up the fact that Ben Watson was recently ranked at #11 in the NFL’s best tight ends. John then compared Vince Redd and Crable to which the guys said that a hybrid of those two would make a great pass rushing outside linebacker.

05/12/09 - “Like Cliff Clavin on Jeopardy”

Posted by James in Wales on May 12, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Like Cliff Clavin on Jeopardy

Fred opened the show with the regular phrase “We’re all here” before Andy reminded him that Erik wasn’t actually there and was on vacation.

Andy brought up the news that the Patriots issued numbers to their new signings including #50 and #80 formerly worn by Mike Vrabel and Troy Brown.

Following brief talk about the signing of WR Terrence Nunn Fred announced that he hadn’t felt as sure, as he does right now, that the Patriots would go all away. He said there was something going on right now at Gillette and all the players and management have a special motivation to win the Super Bowl.

Paul brought up Peter King’s annual NFL rankings that the Patriots topped, and the Chicago Bears surprisingly ranked fourth, before Andy questioned whether not having any depth at linebacker would affect “his feeling”. The guys then discussed the depth at linebacker and Jason Taylor’s desire to be a Patriot.

All this football talk surely had to come to an end with Andy taking shots at the Doctor and his water bottle. Fred asked the listeners to email in with their thoughts on what Erik was doing on vacation before reading out an email from lunch buyer Rajeev who asked about Tyrone McKenzie’s injury and the Patriots roster.

The guys mentioned the potential of the Patritos signing free agent LB Pisa Tinoisamoa who was recently released by the Rams before discussing the implications of an uncapped year. An email from a UK listener brought up Paul and Andy’s constant teasing of Tom Brady which they discussed by saying it only started last year and was about his desire and focus and had nothing to do with Giselle. This brought up a lengthy discussion about Brady’s personal life and his affinity for a lifestyle in the spotlight.

Jim in Texas called in to ask what the guys had been been talking about before questioning Andy whether Pierre Woods is starting calibre and discussing the linebacker depth and potential free agents. Following a few emails which included a game that Andy and Paul enjoyed, a shot at Paul that likened him to Cliff Clavin on Jeopardy the guys talked about a potential “handshake deal” between Jason Taylor and the Patriots.

The guys then briefly talked about Jimmy Buffett, whose Landshark Beer brand reached a deal with Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, before Andy revealed he moved a tree that took him six hours yesterday. An email about the Steelers brought about a discussion concerning the Patriots legacy this decade before Kimani emailed in to tell the guys how to pronounce his name correctly.

The guys discussed James Sanders’ leadership qualities bef0re Paul brought up Karen Guregian’s article in the Boston Herald that mentioned Matthew Slater, Darius Butler and Lawrence Maroney being candidates to replace Ellis Hobbs as the Patriots kick returner.

Following a break, the guys talked about the “high class problems” the Boston sports team have before Fred said that Andy was wearing a shirt that a “farmer would wear to Disney World”. Paul mentioned that Andy hated Disney World, despite never having been there, to which Andy defended himself by saying “I hate rides and I hate people”.

An email brought up the continuing outside linebacker discussion and whether the guys thought Jerod Mayo could take reps outside. The guys all thought that Mayo would stay inside as he is the “centre-piece of the defense” and too short, at 6-1, to play outiside in the Patriots scheme.

After Glenn in Salmon, Idaho invited Fred to go fishing with him Andy chipped in to say he’d prefer that kind of holiday over Disney World. An email from Todd in Nova Scotia asked the guys about “dream linebackers” and whether they’d trade for DaMarcus Ware before dismissing Paul’s comments about Mario Lemieux.

The guys then spoke about former Red Sox infielder Lou Merloni’s comments on Comcast’s “The Baseball Show” Saturday concerning a spring training meeting he attended in which he heard a doctor explain “and educate” how to use steroids properly without abusing them.

An email from Paul in London initiated a discussion about whether the Patriots should acquire a veteran quarterback before an email from James in the UK disagreed with a previous emailers comments about the Super Bowl being played in the UK.

The show came to a close following an emailfrom William Berry, Magnus in Denmark and Josh who likened the story about the Red Sox doctor to a school providing sex education.

04/28/09 - The Special Guest show

Posted by James in Wales on May 2, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

The Special Guest show

Fred opened the first PFW in Progress following the 2009 NFL draft with news that Adam Schefter and Patriots draft pick would be call-in guests. The guys then talked in depth about the draft and their thoughts on the Patriots picks.

Fred then introduced “NFL Insider” Adam Schefter who talked about the draft and how he liked what the Bengal, Jets and Eagles did. He also talked about the Patriots draft and how he liked their philosophy in moving up and down. Following a question from Andy, Schefter told the guys his thoughts about the Raiders draft before talking about the trade of Ellis Hobbs to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Schefter then went onto talk about the Patriots not picking a pass rusher before saying that New England would be a serious option for Jason Taylor but thought that Julius Peppers would be staying in Carolina. He also talked about the possibility of the Patriots going after recent free agent LB Leroy Hill, Matt Cassel’s contract with Kansas City and Vince Wilfork’s contract situation.

Following a break Fred brought up Sebastian Vollmer and his East-West Shrine Game appearance, Patrick Chung’s poor tackling and return game. The guys then talked about Brandon Tate with Paul saying how he thought the third round pick was a steal because of his return ability and was a “good” receiver. They also talked about how many of the Patriots draft picks have return experience which was made more relevant following the trade of Ellis Hobbs to Philadelphia.

They then talked about Darius Butler and how he will most likely be given time to become a starter due to the Patriots dealings in free agency at the Cornerback position. Fred brought up DT Ron Brace before the guys then dismissed the possibility of LB Leroy Hill becoming a Patriot before digressing into political talk following Sen. Arlen Specter’s party switching.

Paul brought up a conversation he had with “someone” who told him that OG Roch Ohrnberger would be the most surprising before Al in Georgia called in to talk about the draft and how he’s already looking forward to next year’s. Al brought up the fact that the Patriots didn’t address their pass rushing needs by drafting an Outside Linebacker to which the guys discussed the prospects that the Patriots could have drafted. The guys talked in depth about a point that Al made that the Patriots’ Linebackers have been better players when they been drafted rather than picked up in free agency.

Following a break, the guys discussed a question from lunch buyer John in South Carolina who asked about a possible trade of Richard Seymour with Carolina Panthers for Julius Peppers. This brought about a discussion about the franchise and transition tags and how the Patriots could cover their bases next year by tagging Richard Seymour, Logan Mankins and Vince Wilfork.

Fred welcomed the second special guest caller in Tyrone McKenzie who answered the guys’ questions on his position in the Patriots scheme, being drafted by a “successful” team and playing for three programs during his college career. They talked about the comments Bill Belichick made about him, his personal issues, draft day experience before talking about the importance of watching tape. Andy asked McKenzie the final question which was about his workout with the Patriots and his pre-draft visit.

Fred spoke briefly about a Comcast customer offer before Paul praised Erik and Andy for their combine report on McKenzie. Jamie in  Houston called in to offer his thought, and jokes, about the Patriots draft and whether not drafting in the first round and trading Ellis Hobbs meant the Patriots were saving cap space for Jason Taylor.

The guys then talked about which of the draft prospects had the potential of making the active roster and which ones could start before talking about Texas Tech coach Mike Leach’s claims that Cleveland Browns Head Coach Eric Mangini leaked reports of Wide Receiver Michael Crabtree acting like a diva during his meeting with the Browns. They also talked about how the forthcoming post-draft issue of Patriots Football Weekly before Fred read a couple of emails applauded the guy’s draft coverage.

John in Dallas called in with the statement that Julian Edelman will make the roster and asked the guys their thoughts on the Patriots’ undrafted rookie free agents. The guys then compared Edelman to Patriots 2008 pick Matthew Slater before an email from TG in NJ brought up the speculation surrounding a possible three day NFL Draft with a primetime first round. Fred said he’d be happy with the change and can see why the NFL would do it. The guys didn’t necessarily agree with Fred but thought that Bill Belichick would agree to it because it would give him more time to research in between each pick.

The guys then talked briefly about mock drafts and how even the experts couldn’t predict this year’s draft before talking about the reports that Vikings coach Brad Childress who believed that the Patriots would have selected Percy Harvin at No. 23 if Minnesota hadn’t scooped him up first.

The show then came to a close after Andy brought up a report about Twitter which led to a tirade about his least favourite web tool and an explanation from Fred about why the Patriots are embracing it.

04/23/09 - “We’re gonna get to Erik”

Posted by James in Wales on Apr 23, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

We're gonna get to Erik

A “pumped and jacked” Fred opened the show today with props to Toyota Tacoma for getting today’s lunch order, provided by “Paul’s favourite emailer” William Berry. Fred’s excitement was due to the upcoming NFL draft which brought up the news that Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry would take the same money as 2008 #1 draft pick Jake Long if the Lions picked him at #1.

Erik brought up Bill Belichick’s pre-draft press conference in which he commented that they had the ammunition to move into the top 10. The guys discussed this and how there is a lot of depth in this year’s draft so the Patriots are in a better position staying where they are.

Mike in Sharon called in to discuss about Patriots Chairman/CEO Robert Kraft’s comments that the Patriots’ season-ticket renewal rate was in the mid 90 percent range. He also complimented the guys on the latest Patriots Football Weekly cover and reiterated the guys’ comments that there wasn’t a consensus number one pick this year.

Fred read an email, from Andy Hart himself, that took shots at Boston Globe reporter Tony Massarotti who, himself, took shots at Andy in his latest column for asking Bill Belichick if there was anyone he regarded as a “can’t-miss” player only to see him fail. Andy expressed his displeasure at Massarotti’s column and likened himself to a player who gets misquoted or taken out of context in the press.

Andy spoke about bumping into Andre Tippett who he discussed the best draft classes in Patriots history with before Paul brought up a fact about draft classes. John in Palm Bay, not John in LA as Fred announced, called in to talk about rumours that the Patriots would trade their #34 draft pick for Dallas’ first round pick next year.

The guys brought up the Jaguars and Lions new uniforms and the Lions new logo before Andy noted that Pro Football Weekly’s Draft Guide had Matthew Stafford and Jason White ranked at 6.6 which put them on a scale that fell below that of a Pro Bowl caliber player. Erik then mentioned the recent rumours about several draft prospects failing drug tests following a Fox report that Harvin and Tate are the only high-profile players to have positive drug tests at the combine.

Fred read out an email from lunch buyer William Berry concerning Erik’s supposed fetish photography before Anthony in Naples called in to talk about USC LB Clay Matthews and how him being a ‘walk on’ has been overblown in the media. Anthony also brought up James Laurinaitis who has been slipping down the various mock drafts of late and wondered if he could slip into the second round for the Patriots to take.

Andy pointed out that Boston Globe reporter Mike Reiss picked Tennessee DE/OLB Robert Ayers in an ESPN Sports Center mock draft at #23 that the guys all disagreed with. Paul offered a new study for Fred to research concerning the falling stock of draft prospects who stay in college for all four years.

Andrew from the Ukraine called in via Skype to comment on the schedule and asked the guys who they would take if Vontae Davis and Aaron Maybin fell to the #23 spot as they have been recently projected to. Andrew also initiated a discussion about the Patriots potential draft trades before the guys talked about several WR prospects and we heard a “preeemium” mp3 question from Mikey Vandalism about draft prospects.

A humorous email from Dan in Fairfax offered a ficticious top ten reasons that Fred allowed PFW listener John in LA to write Friday Out Takes on Patriots.com before “big time” Paul Perillo left for the Big Show.

An either/or game about draft prospects and an over/under game provided the guys with some fun before Fred, who’d been teasing it all show, broached the subject, from Tuesday’s show, of Erik being credited for taking artistic photographs of nude models. Erik offered a full explanation behind the photographs and how he was offered advice by artists at Rhode Island School of Art & Design to expand his artwork and use nudes. Erik got angry from the poking and prodding from Fred and Andy and said it was nobody’s “F-ing business”.

Following a break Fred brought up PFW in Progress’ draft weekend schedule and the excellent coverage over at Patriots.com before talking about Everett Brown as being a candidate for the Patriots to trade up and select at the draft. Fred played an hilarious mp3 from Chris with a tian that asked about the falling stock of linebackers James Laurinaitis and Rey Maualuga.

Several emailers brought up Rey Maualuga which the guys discussed with Andy bringing up his reported drinking problem, on-field freelancing and compared him to Jerod Mayo. Jim in Texas called in to continue the Maualuga discussion and brought up Torry Holt signing for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jim also brought up the recent article in the Boston Globe about Vince Wilfork who said that he would like to re-sign with the Patriots.

Fred read out several emails that brought up discussions about a German draft prospect in OT Sebastian Vollmer, South Carolina ILB Jasper Brinkley, Todd McShay’s latest mock draft and trading up to get Brian Orakpo who Andy loves and called him a “freak”. Erik brought up two films that he has seen recently in The Wrestler and Frost/Nixon before the guys talked about a potential draft day deal for Julius Peppers.

The show came to a close following some talk about adding a more aggressive streak to the Patriots game.

04/21/09 - The moral majority

Posted by James in Wales on Apr 21, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

The Moral Majority

Fred opened today’s show before going live to Head Coach of the New England Patriots Bill Belichick’s pre-draft press conference where Erik and Andy were both heard answering questions.

Following a break the guys returned to the show from the press conference with digs from Fred about not having their questions fully answered. They then discussed what Belichick said, including how there wasn’t any consensus #1 pick and the amount of times he mentioned Matt Cassel.

Fred then stated that Mark Sanchez will be a better NFL QB than Matthew Stafford before Fred talked about the nominees for this year’s Hall of Fame Class. He let slip the names of three players that make up this year’s class being Jon Morris, Jim Nance and Houston Antwine.

The guys then went back to Bill Belichick’s press conference before (finally) getting to John in LA’s call who talked about Erik’s question to Bill and some of Bill’s comments. Fred read an email from lunch buyer Cormac about what proportion of the Patriots previous draft picks they had worked out and if private workouts are smokescreens.

Craig from South Carolina called in (welcome back Craig - it’s been a while) to talk about Julius Peppers dropping hints about becoming a Patriot and asked the guys who will be calling the offensive plays this year. Craig then offered his draft picks before Fred continued with Cormac’s email which brought up a question on how the draft works behind the scenes.

Mike from San Francisco called in, to the requisite Singletary joke, to talk about the grey area in Bill Belichick’s answers before asking the guys some over/under questions and brought up a debate about Pat White and Percy Harvin.

An email from xx in the Vineyard, calling Paul ‘the moral majority’, gave the guys another game of over/under to play and following some talk about fish sticks and a Haveline commercial Jim in Texas called in to talk about the draft. He ended the call to talk about Paul’s anger and how the word ’synergy’ summed up PFW in Progress.

An email from Cedric brought up potential Patriots’ LB draft prospects Rey Maualuga, Larry English and Clay Matthews, the possibility of trading for Julius Peppers on draft day and what Tight End prospects were available in this year’s draft.

An email about the availability of the Patriots throwback jerseys was brought up to which Fred announced that the ProShop will be taking orders online and in stock from tomorrow (04/22/09). John in Dallas called in to talk about the draft and offered his thoughts on some prospects including Connor Barwin, Clay Matthews and Jarron Gilbert.

The guys played an in/out game about Patriots players who will make the NFL Hall of Fame before discussing some recent talk in the PFWinProgress.com forums about Erik being credited on an artistic nude model’s website. Erik denied all knowledge of Daisy May until he saw her picture and “mysteriously” admitted knowing her. The guys then grilled Erik about it without getting very far apart from getting him to admit he took photographs of her before Fred returned to the emails.

Strippers emailed in a quiz which reminded Andy about ESPN.com’s ‘all-time’ draft before an email from Salt asked about Chad Johnson’s trade situation and unpro-rated contracts. An email from Matt in Oregon asked for the return of Swig and talked about the pass protection situation with the return of Tom Brady under center.

04/16/09 - I have a dream

Posted by James in Wales on Apr 16, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

I have a dream

Fred opened the show with the news that it was the birthday of Bill Belichick, Head Coach of the New England Patriots, announced that PFW in Progress had learnt that John Madden had retired and that NFL Network/NFL.com’s Adam Schefter would be leaving and joining ESPN. The guys then engaged in a lengthy discussion about the current spat between NFL Network and Comcast over viewer access that Fred compared to a “pissing contest” with each party apparently “whipping ‘em out and measuring them”.

John in LA then called in, during a “tough day”, to talk about Robert Ayers who Mike Mayock is pretty but Andy and Erik weren’t too keen. The guys then brought up the throwback jerseys that Fred Taylor had been modelling to which Andy asked what number/player Fred would choose. Fred decided on J. Steele and #25 rather than a player.

The guys then discussed the trade talks surrounding WRs Anquan Boldin and Braylon Edwards before John in Dallas called in to “talk about the draft” and whether the guys would trade a 1st and a 3rd for Boldin. The guys said they’d prefer to trade for Julius Peppers because the need is on defense and not offense. John argued his case very well saying that the Patriots could get English, Laurinaitis or Sintim with one of their other second round picks but the guys stuck to their guns. Andy called John’s call “the second best call in the history of the show”.

Michael in Puerto Rico called in with a Spanish lesson for Andy and to talk about NFL Draft Countdown’s latest mock draft which sees the Patriots take Rey Maualuga, Connor Barwin and Louis Delmus. The guys thought that would be a great draft but would like to swap Connor Barwin for Larry English who they see as a better impact player in year one. Michael then signed off by telling the guys that he was in the military in order for Fred to say “Thankyou for your sevice”.

Following a break Fred read an email from lunch buyer Jacob from Denmark which asked the guys some questions about the draft including one about “Ziggy” Hood and his fit for the Patriots. Jacob brought up the Wembley game and said that they should just hand the Patriots the [Lombardi] trophy now.

Andy brought up the new Star Trek movie before Fred revealed why he was having a bad day which included basketball uniforms and mulch before Jim in Texas called in to ask Fred some draft questions. The guys said Fred couldn’t name ten draft prospects and following a good effort Jim asked Paul if he had beaten up Tugender before talking about Vontae Davis. Following some more digs about his draft research Fred said that he “worked every day to keep you guys in a job”. The guys promptly got “off his back” and agreed with him.

After some brief talk about Malcolm Jenkins and cornerbacks Danny in Orlando called in to talk about the toughness of the Patriots schedule which the guys discussed in depth. Mike from San Francisco called in to talk about Fred’s draft value article which led to a discussion about an academic paper by Cade Massey and Richard Thale and the supposed “toxic top five”.

Following an email about the Patriots schedule and how it could coincide with a stay in Alabama Paul brought up his ‘dream’ about getting an RV and going to watch SEC college football games. Andy thought that Diet Pepsi and Miller Lite could sponsor it to which Erik reminded Paul that he shouldn’t drink and drive.

An email from Jamie in Houston offered the guys BBQ and brews when they go to Houston before Swig called in to tell the guys it was his birthday (Happy Birthday man) and to congratulate Andy on his little S Hart. Swig then told a story about Heath Evans’ recent fundraiser in Florida where Vince Wilfork ate a 1/2 lb Kobe beef burger as an appetiser.

An email from Strippers quizzed the guys about Petros Papadakis before an email from Paul in London asked why the PFW mock draft didn’t have Rey Maualuga before Erik called Paul a stalker because of a Facebook ‘interview’ with Connor Barwin. The guys talked briefly about Slingbox before Shahzad from Manchester enquired about the guys thoughts on Bill Belichick’s draft technique of looking ahead to future drafts.

An email on the strength of the Patriots schedule inspired a future classic Fred S. Kirsch quote of “Judging your schedule at the end of the season always comes out more accurate”. An email reignited the Pat White discussion before it became quizzing Erik’s vocabulary time with the words callipygian and callimastian which he went 1-1 but he couldn’t get William Berry’s word of the day which was susurrus.

04/14/09 - “Don’t be afraid to fail”

Posted by James in Wales on Apr 14, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Don't be afraid to fail

Fred opened the show with the news that Andy bought lunch from Tavolino Pizza Gourmet and introduced “Toyota Tacoma” who will be replacing Dan Tugender behind the glass. Fred also spoke about the announcement of the 2009 NFL schedule that takes place 7PM ET at CBS Scene, Patriots Place.

Regular opening caller John in LA called in to pose some potential Patriots draft combinations, talk about the crop of Cornerbacks and USF LB Tyrone McKenzie who is scheduled to visit the Patriots. Andy brought up the recent Debate Friday on Patriots.com that saw Andy and Fred go head-to-head over Pat White and the Wildcat offence.

Fred brought up his recent hypothesis about the payment of the top ten draft picks and come up with a theory that Peyton Manning’s rookie contract was to blame for the increased rookie salaries. This led to a discussion on incentive laden contracts in rookie contracts before the guys announced the sad news that NFL Films’ Harry Kalas had passed away.

Jim in Texas called in to talk about ‘Debate Friday’ and to discuss the Wildcat and previous offenses like the Run and Shoot. Jim also agreed with Andy that the Patriots should take Northern Illinois DE Larry English in the first round and if he’s not there maybe Everett Brown will be. The guys agreed that Everett Brown was one of the top prospects available and would be great value at #23. Jim then brought up Mel Kiper’s draft bible that had Boston College DT Ron Brace as the Patriots third round pick. Jim ended his call by offering some advice for the Gostkowski kicking challenge with an “inspiring” tale about a sparring match with a bigger guy and telling Erik that he shouldn’t be “afraid to fail” .

The guys then talked about recent news stories including “idiot” 911 calls, the rise in gun shootings and the Somalian Pirates before talking about the announcement of the 2009 NFL schedule.

Following a break Fred read an email from Sean McLoughlin containing some negative thoughts about the Pat White “experiment” before Fred got worked up over an infomercial. Andy brought up the recent signing of Steelers LB James Harrison with a nod to the potential contract that Julius Peppers would command. After a discussion about the economy the guys discussed other draft prospects that could play multiple positions in the NFL.

An email brought up a discussion about Bill Belichick’s draft theory and whether he looks to future drafts when choosing positions he’d like to draft. Al in Dayton called in, and after some kind words from the guys about his radio voice, to talk about his “favourite time of the year” with tracking the various mock drafts.

Following a game of over/under from an emailer and a brief Percy Harvin/Pat White comparison the guys talked about the distribution of Patriots Football Weekly which led to Fred explaining his phobia of grocery stores. Erik was then forced into divulging a story about when he hit on a checkout attendant several years ago.

The guys brought up a baseball video game commercial starring Dustin Pedroia, talked some baseball, Republican tea-bagging before reading some emails. The guys talked some more about lowering the rookie salary pool before coming up with some pun headlines around the Patriots drafting Larry English.

After Hot Amy challenged Erik with the meaning of an extremely long word Mike from San Francisco called in to discuss the rookie salary pool and offer some facts about it.

The show came to a close with an email from William Berry that offered some words to stump Erik of which he went 1-1.

04/09/09 - Happy Birthdays

Posted by James in Wales on Apr 9, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Happy Birthday Cormac, Jackson & TJ

Following the ‘Rudy’ opening, which Erik decreed his “favourite opening”, the guys talked about Mel Kiper’s recent four round draft which saw the Patriots take RB Donald Brown at #23, DE/LB Connor Barwin at #34, CB/S Sean Smith at #47, QB/WR Pat White at #58, TE Cornelius Ingram, at #89, Andy’s boy, “the white guy”, LB Scott McKillop at #97 and “Erik’s guy” OT Dan Gay at #124.

The guys discussed the rest of Kiper’s mock draft before talking in depth about the “intrigue” of Pat White and how Bill Belichick has previously used the spread offence and how he could use White. Fred expressed his doubt about picking an unconventional player in the first two rounds which quickly led to a chat about the advertising of ‘Guitar Hero’.

John from Dallas called in to talk about the draft and if the Patriots would trade up to get Wake Forest LB Aaron Curry who Andy compared to Titans LB Keith Bullock who is a solid player but isn’t an “impact player”. Fred announced the PFW in Progress draft weekend schedule before Erik noted that the draft is exactly six months away from the Patriots game against the Buccaneers in the UK.

Following a break, Paul’s “favourite caller”,  Jim in Texas called in to talk about the Cutler deal and draft prospect Larry English. The passionate Jim in Texas ended his call by saying he had questioned Fred’s passion recently but judged him to still be the ‘ultimate homer’. Bryan from Brighton called in to give Paul props for comparing Cassel to Orton on his recent WEEI appearance and wondered if anyone in the AFC East would have “half a brain” to hire Bill Belichick’s “nemesis” Mike Shanahan.

An email from TG in NJ reignited the ‘Wildcat’ discussion before the guys talked about the status of the Jason Taylor situation. James in New Hampshire called in to talk about the gunfire at Brady’s wedding and Alabama Safety Rashad Johnson. An email from Cormac, Happy Birthday man, brought up the Wembley game and the pronunciation of Andy’s wife’s name.

An email from William Berry brought about a new game that will test Erik’s vocabulary before another “preeeeemium question” from Mikey Vandalism that brought up Vince Wilfork’s contract and when, and if,  the Patriots will offer him a contract extension. Fred read a humorous email from Kieran in Ireland that offered Paul advice for his love of NorthEastern sports (and for his general fitness).

Chris with a tian called in, from the basement, to tell Erik about his recent trip to Providence and to offer his thoughts on the ‘Wildcat’ and Pat White. The guys then discussed how the entire Patriots roster would be drafted in order of the 2009 NFL draft following an email from Pat in Chicago. The guys chose Brady - Lions, Moss - Rams, Wilfork - Chiefs, Mayo - Seahawks, Seymour/Warren - Browns, Welker - Bengals, Watson - Raiders, Seymour/Warren - Jaguars.

An mp3 email, in the voice of Stephen Hawkings, from James Pettigrew brought about a lengthy discussion on the implications of an uncapped year. The guys went back to the last show’s discussion of man boobs whilst discussing various draft prospects before talking about the Patriots’ 09 schedule and who they thought would be the toughest opponents.

Following some political talk the guys discussed the value of Vince Wilfork, whether he could be a three down player and if his diabetes would come into consideration. The guys then played along with an emailer’s percentage game before the show ended following some talk about the Mayan prophecy that the world will ended in 2012 and that this weekend brings the birthday celebrations of Andy’s son Jackson and Paul’s son T.J. Happy birthday both.
