06/25/09 - Happy Birthday Fred ‘The Man’ Kirsch

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 25, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Happy Birthday Fred

Fred opened the show noting that the studio was a lot emptier than Tuesday before Paul and Erik mentioned that it was Fred’s birthday (Happy Birthday Fred). PFW listeners Nick from Hawaii, who bought lunch, and Kevin Couture joined the studio as special guests before Fred brought up Paul’s appearance on WEEI yesterday. The guys then discussed the news that Julius Peppers signed the franchise tender contract offered by Carolina before Paul gave Tacoma a hard time for “screwing up” his lunch order.

Fred then welcomed Nick to the show who spoke about being a manager at the Hawaii football program and how he knows Patriots long snapper Jake Ingram. He then welcomed the Kevin Couture to the show before the guys asked him about how long he has been a Patriots fan before Fred questioned whether he’d been to Patriots Place yet. After Kevin said he was planning on going after the show, the guys mentioned that they paid the Hall a visit last week and Andy had the best vertical leap and Erik missed the Adam Vinatieri field goal.

Following a break, Fred read an email that asked if the guys thought that the NFC & AFC East would have multiple teams in the playoffs. The guys discussed the Dallas Cowboys with Fred saying that he thought it was tougher to play football in Dallas than baseball in New York with all the distractions that come with it.

Paul noted that the Patriots had become the model franchise, with the model owner and coach, and they may have learned that from the Cowboys. After talking briefly about Daniel Snyder and Mark Cuban and more talk about the Cowboys, Fred brought up the news that Shaquille O’Neal was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers to team up with LeBron James.

The guys discussed a list of  the most clutch quarterbacks that saw Tom Brady placed third behind John Elway and Joe Montana and how Brady’s famous Super Bowl drives resulted in field goals rather than touchdowns like Elway’s and Montana’s. The guys then moved on to talk about Rex Ryan before Fred brought up Troy Brown’s recent induction into the New England Sports Museum at tonight’s “The Tradition” event.

Fred read an email from Basil, a guest from Tuesday’s show, that mentioned the visit made him a PFW convert (glad to hear it) before Fred waxed lyrical about Pepper, another guest from the same show. After a few emails concerning “the great debate”, the guys played an emailer’s game of over/under before Orlando called in to discuss Shawn Crable. Orlando also asked the guys for their top five owners

06/23/09 - Salt & Pepper in the house

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 23, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Salt & Pepper in the house

The guys began the show with a discussion about the weather and the news that Andy was on vacation. Fred welcomed lunch-buyer Marty Nado to the studio and mentioned that long-time listener Salt would be joining the show later.

Fred brought up the fact that the guys were working on the Patriots yearbook and admitted he “screwed up” with the ‘Top 50 Moments in Patriots History’ on Patriots.com but announced that it would be up by the end of the week.

Fred asked special guest Marty a few questions about the Patriots, the veal and how long he listened to the show. A question to Marty brought about a discussion about Warren Sapp’s comments that younger players don’t listen to older players. The guys discussed whether this was the case in the Patriots locker room and all agreed that it was but probably less so than elsewhere. They put this down to the mentality Bill Belichick instills in his players before discussing how hard it was for Belichick to instill it when he first arrived at New England.

Paul brought up the news that the Patriots offered Greg Ellis a contract but were turned down in favor of Oakland. This then led to a discussion about Julius Peppers and how he still hasn’t signed the tender offered by Carolina. Fred noted that NFL Network were showing SuperBowl XVI and that the half-time show was the “greatest half-time show, any sport, ever”. Paul asked Marty if he agreed, but as a Bruce Springsteen fan Marty said he preferred the half-time show of SuperBowl XLII. Paul then asked Marty what the attraction of Springsteen was and how people keep going to his shows.

After discussing the emotional half-time show of SuperBowl XLI, Fred mentioned an idea of his about companies who make toner could make them smell more like something from his childhood.

Following a break, Fred welcomed Salt and Pepper to the studio saying that Salt was “playing well above the ramp” before asking them questions like how long they have been fans of the Patriots. Fred brought up some stories about being at college in Tampa including riding a ten-speed over a causeway. Salt tried to get Fred to divulge his three-way story before welcoming Salt and Pepper’s friends Basil and Jordan.

Basil told a story about living behind where Bass Pro now stands and how his father was a trainer for Trotters and Pacers. Salt asked to meet Kristina Akra to have his picture taken “between them” before Fred read some emails that brought up “the great debate” and one that offered a best of three game.

Erik asked for verification following Basil’s boast of having something measuring 9 inches before Fred mentioned that last week’s show got the Doctor in trouble from Patriots PR. The guys then discussed the UFL, it’s recent draft and whether a developmental league would be more beneficial than college. After Salt took a shot at Erik for checking his emails during the show Paul brought up whether Manny Ramirez should be allowed to play in the minor leagues during his 50-game suspension.

Following another break, Fred read some more emails that brought up ‘the great debate’ and Marty offered his thoughts on it and sided with the Fred, Andy and Erik. A typically enthusiastic Jim from Texas called in to chime in on ‘the great debate’ before Fred read an emailer’s game of true/false. Fred briefly brought up the Boston Globe’s questioning of Tedy Bruschi and whether this would be his last year before Scott from North Carolina called in. Scott offered his perspective on ‘the great debate’ and gave Fred some ammunition for his side of the argument before getting into it with Paul.

06/18/09 - “Like an egg in a nest”

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 18, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Like an egg in a nest

Today’s show opened with the news that the Patriots signed their fourth-round draft pick Rich Ohrnberger, the offensive lineman from Penn State, and released rookie free-agent linebacker Antonio Appleby. Andy brought up the fact that Vince Wilfork tweeted that he was at this week’s US Open at Beth Page, NY, thanks to a Father’s Day present from his children.

Fred mentioned that he received a Sony e-reader for his anniversary, which Andy asked for an extensive review of. The guys then ragged on Fred for being a gadget freak before Fred discussed his favorite apps for his iPhone. Andy mentioned the news that Comcast New England would be doing a live podcast from the NBA draft.

The guys then discussed Brett Favre’s recent appearance on ‘Joe Buck Live’, if he’d be joining the Vikings and whether he could help them before Paul brought up the Brady for 10 years/undefeated season debate from last week’s show. The guys the argued the point before Chris with a tian called in, following a ribbing from Andy about having a facial, to offer his opinion on wanting to have that undefeated season.

Following a break, Fred brought up the poor weather and how he hasn’t been in the pool yet. Andy quickly asked “Shrinkage?” to which Fred replied “Oh yeah, like an egg in a nest”. Classic Kirsch. Fred then read an email from lunch buyer Cedric in Knottsville (despite not being happy with his sandwich) which concerned Donte’ Stallworth’s 30-day sentence for killing a pedestrian while driving drink and how he deserved more based on Michael Vick’s sentence. The guys discussed both situations before Fred read Cedric’s other question concerning Vince Wilfork’s contract, the potential trade for Derrick Burgess and Larry Fitzgerald (Andy hates Fitzgerald’s father).

Swig called in, in inimitable fashion, to discuss Tuesday’s show, calling it “the greatest show ever”, and to chime in on ‘the’ debate.

06/04/09 - “You are a pussy”

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 4, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

You are a pussy

Following the great new Gilligan’s Island intro from Tree Hugger, Fred opened the show with an apology for his performance on Tuesday’s show blaming Alyssa Milano. Paul told about a visit to his son Will’s school show, in which he sang six songs, and spoke about how several parents came up to him to talk about the NECN show.

The guys quickly touched on Rodney Harrison’s retirement before talking about the NBC conference call officially announcing Harrison and Tony Dungy as analysts. The guys discussed former players who become television analysts before discussing whether Harrison would do anything for Patriots Football Weekly.

Fred then brought up the comments made by the Jets new head coach Rex Ryan about not kissing Belichick’s rings and Tony Dungy calling the Patriots the team of the decade. The guys then discussed Harrison’s Hall of Fame merits, in which they all thought he wouldn’t get in, comparing him to other defensive backs in the Hall and whether his suspension will hurt his chances.

After a discussion about Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett’s almost no-hitter, John in Palm Bay callled in to ask about the Patriots’ All-Time Team before Fred played an mp3 from Mikey Vandalism that discussed Rex Ryan’s comments. Fred then went on a tirade about how the Patriots are “going to pull his pants down and spank him so hard”, “humiliate him as a coach and a man” and “send him home with the something up his you-know-what”.

Tree Hugger called in to talk about his excellent Gilligan’s Island opening and who will fill Rodney Harrison’s shoes in regard to being a go-to guy for the media. The guys discussed at length potential replacements including Adalius Thomas, Shawne Springs and Patrick Chung (when he finishes his rookie season) before discussing where this off-season ranks in Patriots history.

Following a break, the guys questioned the Doctor on why Toyota Tacoma isn’t working the boards before discussing Nikki Cox. Fred then read a few emails that discussed putting Erik “in check”, Vince Wilfork’s absence and the quality of the conference calls. After Andy revealed that he was going to see Billy Joel and Elton John, Fred said “You are a pussy” before Erik called him AC/DC.

Several emails brought up another discussion about Rodney Harrison’s Hall of Fame merits before Craig in North Carolina called in to talk about Fred getting worked up over Rex Ryan’s comments. He also compared Rodney Harrison and current safeties, including Ed Reed, to further the discussion of Harrison’s Hall of Fame merits. This led to another typical Fred and Paul argument over what Ed Reed could do that Rodney Harrison couldn’t and how the Pro Football Hall of Fame is different to other sports.

Fred then played another mp from Stevie H that sung a song for the guys that maybe should have been screened. Andy claimed that this was the “most vulgar show ever”. After further Rodney Hall of Fame discussion the guys discussed the potential 09 Patriots starting lineups with Fred saying Sebastian Vollmer will be starting at right tackle, despite never playing there and only taking reps at left tackle.

An emailer brought up some ideas to promote PFWinProgress including invitation cards before Fred announced that he had a fire at his house. The guys brought up whether this would affect Fred’s annual party and ended the show with possible time changes for next week’s shows.

06/02/09 - Erik’s spelling bee success

Posted by James in Wales on Jun 2, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Erik's spelling bee success

Following a “weak intro”, Fred opened today’s show “pumped” about what the guys said about today’s OTA that held the show up for two hours. Fred then plugged a “great” listener’s mp3 before Andy brought up a forthcoming conference call from Rodney Harrison and that “all signs point towards” his retirement. The guys then discussed Harrison and his Hall of Fame potential before discussing today’s OTA with the general consensus that Brady looked more comfortable and sharper out there.

The guys discussed Richard Seymour, Joey Galloway - who returned punts alongside Wes Welker and Kevin Faulk before Fred asked how the rookies were looking. Paul brought up his “boy” Darius Butler who intercepted a pass to Randy Moss and Andy spoke about how recent sigining Brandon McGowan took a lot of reps.

Andy brought up lunch buyer Mark in Cheddar before the Doctor played a fantastic mp3 from Tree Hugger that “raised the bar” before the guys brought up a thread over at PatsFans.com that discussed the Patriots media coverage. (Make sure you go and give the PFW guys props over at PatsFans.com)

Paul brought up a discussion he had with Shawne Springs about when, as a Washington Redskin, he lost 52-7 to the Patriots. John in LA called in to discuss the PatsFans.com topic and the supposed Patriots ideal linebacker size.

The guys then brought up the lost French airliner in the Atlantic - likening it to Lost before Fred read an email from Paul in London that brought up the re-signing of Tom Malone and BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ practise squad eligibility. After a quick discussion about Stan Van Gundy, Fred read an email from William Berry that offered his casting choices for a Patriots film.

Fred read an email from lunch-buyer Mark in Cheddar who said he thought Andy and Erik were forming a ‘bromance’ which led to a confession from Andy that he felt “feminine” after watching an episode of ‘Jon & Kate Plus Eight’. After Mark’s question about Erik’s kicking competition with Patriots Kicker Stephen Gostkowski, Erik offered a couple of facts about himself that included winning a Spelling Bee.

The guys then discussed what they thought the players felt about OTAs before Fred pondered the thought of removing all the water from the surface of the earth. Fred then played the latest mp3 from Stevie H that took another shot at Erik and asked a question about what the guys would do in charge of the Bills defense in the opening game against the Patriots.

Fred then read some more emails which brought up Wilfork’s absence at the OTAs and Ty Law’s conversation on NFL.com before Steve in Winchester called in to offer some alternatives to the Scalavino-Gostkowski kicking challenge including a push-up contest between Paul Perillo and Patrick Chung. Fred then challenged Andy to a push-up contest before mis-pronounced Yosemite during an email involving a Patriots cap worn by a German mountain climber.

The guys then discussed Eric Alexander and Andy spoke of a humorous OTA moment involving Matthew Slater trying to catch a ball. Andy then brought up the Boston College Linebacker Mark Herzlich who was recently diagnosed with cancer and asked Paul if he thought Herzlich would play again.

Fred read an email from Not So Hot Amy that called out Stevie H’s mp3 and attached a sound clip from Family Guy. Andy spoke about following Mark Cuban on Twitter before an emailer asked about the starting Patriots defense. Andy obviously thought James Sanders would be a starter with Erik joking that Sanders told the Patriots PR department that he was worried about the “guy from PFW” asking for him all the time.

The guys discussed Rodney Harrison’s upcoming conference call and questioned whether he would be retiring before talking about the story that Cleveland Browns coach EricMangini made rookies take a 10 hour bus ride to ‘volunteer’ coach at his high school football camp in Hartford, Connecticut.

The guys quickly discussed the news that the Patriots were developing the first NFL lottery ticket before moving on to discussing astronauts drinking their own urine. After chatting about Paul’s book and American Beauty the guys ended the show with a game of over/under from Oliver in Australia.
