Posted by James in Wales on Mar 31, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Congratulations Andy

PFW in Progress ‘veterans’ Fred and Paul opened today’s show with the announcement that Andy and his wife Deirdre had given birth to a daughter named Sydney (congratulations Andy). Fred and Paul talked about how they thought Andy would take to being a father of a daughter. They then talked about the Patriots HOF committee, which includes Paul, who selected the Patriots All-Decade teams today and nominated three players that fans will be able to vote on for inclusion in the Patriots Hall of Fame.

The guys then talked about the lack of recent signings and how there hasn’t been any development in the Jason Taylor situation before John in LA called in to continue the Jason Taylor discussion. They also briefly talked about former Patriots WR Shockmain Davies, the second time in a week he’d been mentioned, James Sanders and third down backs.

Erik returned following a break and the guys discussed Giselle’s recent comments about Tom Brady saying she initially considered leaving the QB when his ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan announced she was carrying Brady’s child.

Jim in Texas called in to move the topic of conversation away from Tom Brady’s personal life and onto the Patriots Top 10 draft classes which he gave as ‘93. He also discussed several prospects including USC LB Rey Maualuga, Northern Illinois LB Larry English before moving onto USC and the Pac-10.

Lunch buyer John in Palm Bay called in to talk about a potential draft day trade that the Patriots could make for a future pick before the guys continued the USC and Pac-10 discussion. Following an email Erik gave his assessment of Brian Cushing particularly an answer he gave to a question asked about substance abuse.

An email from Chris in the Bronx brought about a discussion on the role of future production when teams drafting prospects before the guys talked about the ShamWow® guy. Paul talked about the pain and suffering of being a NorthEastern fan after an email brought up NorthEastern’s hockey loss to Cornell.

The guys talked about the Jay Cutler situation at Denver before an email brought up Tully Banta Cain and where he would most make an impact this season.

03/26/09 - Soda in soup bowls

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 28, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Soda in soup bowls

With a mouthful of food Fred opened the show to thank Bryan in California for today’s lunch which they were washing down with soda in soup bowls. The guys then went into the recent rule changes that were discussed at the owner’s meeting, some of which Paul had a problem. One of which was the potential of extra games added to the regular season which the guys discussed in depth including the potential ramifications including the loss of quality in “the product” and player salaries.

Follwing an email from lunch buyer Bryan in California, Chris with a tian called in to discuss the potential of extra regular games and ask a question about the Patriots draft picks before he had to leave quickly as he seemed like he was in a party. After a break, the guys talked about the impending birth of Andy’s daughter before John in Palm Bay called in to ask for the Patriots records in the various locations they have played.

Jim in Texas called in to talk about Torry Holt visiting the Jaguars, asked the guys what they thought of former Jaguars WR Reggie Williams and brought up the Julius Peppers situation which seemed to have gone quiet. He left with an offer of lunch and a shot at Tugender before the guys joined in with Andy going too far having”crossed the line”.

The guys then talked briefly about moving SuperBowl to Patriots Day before Andy brought up Rodney Harrison talking about the rule changes and how he thought they would make the game ’soft’. Fred then read out a few emails that discussed the rule changes and an extended season before Paul left for the Big Show.

The guys then briefly discussed draft prospect Pat White before delving into the supposed elite prospects that included Everett Brown, Brian Orakpo and Aaron Curry. Fred declared that he will begin his draft prospect research “next week” as he needs to “get upto speed”. This made Andy and Erik laugh particularly when Fred said he’d be watching all the tapes.

After Erik hit out at the emails concerning the show’s switch to Flash the guys discussed events that will be held at Gillette Stadium including rumours that the NHL winter classic would be held there. Fred also hinted that Metallica would be coming to town.

Erik then directed people wanting to discuss the Flash/RealPlayer issue to go to PFWinProgress.com and talk about it in the forum. He had good things to say about the website but, can I remind you Erik, that “Wales and England are different countries”.

The guys then talked about the news that Robert Kraft had inducted former Patriots owner Billy Sullivan into the Patriots Hall of Fame. After a game of over/under Fred read a few emails which brought about discussions on Zach Thomas, Tony Gonzalez and Alphonso Smith.

The show ended following an email from Craig Bunse about the Patriots’ O-Line, one from Matt of Optimum Performance and an announcement that PFW in Progress would be getting it’s own T1 line.

03/24/09 - Welcome home Paul

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 24, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Welcome home Paul

Fred opened the show alluding to some off-air banter about Toyota Tacomas, welcomed back Paul Perillo from vacation and Andy informed the listeners that Erik is doing Tully Banta-Cain and Kevin Faulk. Fred announced that the Patriots’ signing of OL Damane Duckett and the three compensatory picks the Patriots were awarded.

The guys then talked about the first of the many ‘Top 10′ lists that will feature on Patriots.com over the course of the Patriots 50th anniversary year before discussing the news that the Patriots will open the 2009 season with a home game against the Buffalo Bills. This swiftly followed into a debate on whether the TO move would be a major disruption or a no-brainer.

The guys then moved on to the player safety rules proposals that the NFL passed today at its annual meeting, including the ‘Tom Brady’ rule and the ‘Ryan Clark’ rule. After some chat about microphone issues Al from Georgia called in to talk further about the player safety rule changes and  how overtime wasn’t discussed at the owner’s meeting. The guys, and Al, then talked in depth about overtime and how they thought they should do it in the NFL.

Following a break Erik, who joined the show, talked about his chat with Kevin Faulk before Paul gave the shocking news that he didn’t get into one altercation during his vacation. After a few emails, that mocked Andy and Erik, discussed the Patriots’ potential draft picks, John in LA’s weekly column and the Jay Cutler situation in Denver, Nate in Florida called in to talk about the forthcoming draft. He asked the guys their opinions on prospects including Virginia OLB Clint Sintim, Florida WR Percy Harvin and Alabama safety Rashad Johnson.

Fred read a  few emails that took shots at Andy before Jamie in Houston called in to take a shot and to talk about Rey Maualuga which led to a mini Peppers/Taylor debate. The guys then discussed the ‘Brady rule’ further before Fred read a few emails including one from Craig Bunse, the first since Paul’s return.

An email from Russell in New Zealand asked a question about the Patriots draft choices and offered his own suggestions including Illinois CB Vontae Smith, Wake Forest CB Alphonso Smith and PFW target late round pick South Carolina ILB Jasper Brickley. The show ended with an email from Chris Ferreira with a reason for why the show wasn’t streaming live and an email from Paul in London offering the guys lunch from Papa Gino’s.

03/17/09 - Happy St Patrick’s Day

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 18, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Happy St Patrick's Day

Fred opened the show with another comment about Paul’s vacation, saying he was nude sunbathing in Florida, before talking about the conflicting reports from NFL.com writers Vic Carucci and Adam Schefter over the potential Julius Peppers trade. The guys then discussed both reports before Fred announced that PFW in Progress will be streaming in Flash on Thursday’s show.

Following some banter with ‘Tugee’ Fred announced that Vic Carucci would be a phone guest on today’s show and that long lost listener Craig Buntz, from South Carolina, had emailed the show. Fred wished the listeners a Happy St Patrick’s Day before mentioning the upcoming London trip and wanted to gauge what the UK listeners would be doing.

Fred then took a call from special guest Vic Carucci of NFL.com who, broke the Julius Peppers trade story, talked about the potential trade with the Panthers. Despite Adam Schefter’s comments on WEEI this morning, that he is 99% sure that Peppers won’t be a Patriot, Carucci stood by his story.

Following a break the guys discussed the call from Carucci and broke down some of the things he said in comparison to his original article. Fred questioned whether the Peppers trade was just a ruse by the Patriots in order to get Jason Taylor for a lower price before John in LA called in to talk about Brady working out and questioned the potential investment in Julius Peppers.

The guys then touched upon the Greg Lewis conference call, the signing of Al Johnson and the re-signing of Tank Williams, Mike Wright, Wesley Britt and PFW favourite Ray “Bubba” Ventrone. John in Palm Bay called in briefly to pose a question about the Patriots schedule before the guys talked about next week’s compensatory picks announcements and how the Patriots should get at least a third round pick for losing Asante Samuel next year.

Fred read an email from the legendary PFW listener Craig Buntz, who has been AWOL since Super Bowl XLII, that discussed about the signing of Greg Lewis before taking a shot at Andy. Following Andy’s urban dictionary word of the day the guys briefly mentioned the video clip of Bill Belichick singing with Bon Jovi that has being doing the rounds on the web.

An email from Mark in Cheddar brought up the great new Patriots Football Weekly overseas subscription offer and praised the potential Julius Peppers trade. Anthony in Naples called in to express his disappointment in the Joey Galloway signing, talk about the Peppers rumour talk and to stand up for Tom Brady following Andy’s criticism of Brady’s image as being “one of the guys”.

An email from Tammy in New York took some shots at Andy, mostly his head, following him calling her a lesbian in a previous show before the guys read some emails from UK based listeners offering restaurant advice. Matt in Connecticut called in to offer some advice before asking about subscribing to Patriots Football Weekly.

The show came to a close following a game of true and false from an emailer and a couple of emails taking shots at Erik (Mark in Cheddar) and Andy (Josh from Arlington).

03/12/09 - Smear the queer

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 12, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Smear the queer

Fred opened the show with some Paul ribbing and announced the news that Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs are now officially Patriots and that special teams captain Larry Izzo has joined the New York Football Jets.

The guys then discussed Leigh Bodden’s contract and the Patriots’ depth at the cornerback position and how it could bring about some great competition in training camp. The guys also thought that the Patriots would probably take a corner with one of their top four picks in the draft. Fred said that the Patriots still need an outside linebacker to which Andy mentioned Jason Taylor. The guys then talked about the possibility of Jason Taylor joining the Patriots to which Erik thought Taylor would be a ‘Plan B’ with ‘Plan A’ being Julius Peppers.

John in LA called in and, following a few digs from the guys, got a little defensive over his column before previewing this week’s column which, surprisingly, will feature Terrell Owens signing for the Bills. The guys then talked about Tom Brady being called “naive” by his new wife Giselle Bundchen and how they thought he would be getting his “balls busted” by his teammates when he returns to Foxborough. This then led into a discussion about questioning Brady’s passion for football.

Salt (how’s Pepper?) called in to talk about Larry Izzo going to the Jets and the potential of former Bears safety Mike Brown and former Rams’ receiver Torry Holt coming to the Patriots.

Following a break, the guys talked about pizza from Providence before Erik swore following a comment about Egypt from Andy. An emailer brought up a discussion about Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis who Andy thought wasn’t a good fit for the Patriots. After some random talk about apple juice John in Palm Bay called in to talk about veteran quarterbacks and the rumour that Joey Harrington had visited the Patriots.

An email brought about a discussion about the losses of key special teams players of Izzo, Washington and Paxton before an email from Mark in Cheddar mocked Jamie in Houston’s call from the last show. The guys then talked about playing “smear the queer” in school before talking about the Slap Chop following an infomercial on the television in the studio.

Strippers emailed in a “fun fact” before the guys talked about Ricky Gervais following an email about a skit on youtube featuring Elmo and Gervais. Jamie in Houston called in to talk about his call on yesterday’s show before Andy called him “an idiot with passion” when he ended his call.

The show ended with some emails and further Twitter talk.

03/10/09 - Paul joins NAMBLA, go Huskies!

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 10, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Northeastern Huskies

The Swingers opening greeted us today before Fred announced that he was “worked up” over politics. Fred mentioned that all the team were in attendance apart from Paul, who he promised to get to later.

The guys then brought up the news that Terrell Owens had joined AFC East rivals Buffalo Bills which the guys discussed for a while. Erik said that the move will bring the Bills into contention for the AFC East for most commentors but, in fact, things will go bad after a month.

The guys mentioned the increase in traffic on Patriots.com following stories about the vote on the site asking if the Patriots should sign TO. Fred brought up the debut of PFW in Progress listener John in LA’s new weekly column and mentioned some football news including the loss of Heath Evans to New Orleans and the re-signing of James Sanders.

Fred announced that he is now “Twittering” before Erik said that they had now received all their draft prospect footage which he and Andy will soon begin to watch as part of the guys’ regular excellent draft coverage. Fred then took great pleasure in giving the news about the “first leg” of Paul’s vacation which began in Richmond, VA to watch his beloved NorthEastern in the Colonial Athletic Association Basketball Championship. The Huskies lost their first game and Andy invented a new club for Paul to join, NAMBLA (Northeastern Athletics Mens Basketball Love Association), and offered a title for today’s show.

Andy then said that he has an exclusive interview with Nick Caserio for the draft preview edition of PFW inProgress before Fred announced some forthcoming features for Patriots.com. Following some further Twitter talk Fred pressed Erik on his latest art show before announcing the sad news that Dan Tugender is “moving on” to a bigger job in the organisation. Congratulations Dan.

Following a break John in Palm Bay made an inaudible call to the show before giving it another go to ask the guys about potential Patriots draft picks before the guys got to some emails including a humorous Erik-esque blog post from Tom in England.

The guys then talked about the latest crop of draft prospects including TE Brandon Pettigrew before John in South Carolina emailed in some advice to Erik and John in LA.

Jamie in Houston called in to ask the guys their take on TO signing for Buffalo and offered his take which was if the Patriots signed the controversial wide receiver they could guarantee an undefeated season and a SuperBowl “book it!”. This turned into a lengthy debate over TO and Moss before Jamie was blown up.

Fred then went off topic to discuss Monkeys before Chris with a tian called in with some “caller on caller crime” by telling Jamie in Houston and other fans to forget the 16-0 season as we won’t see anything like that for a while. John in LA called in to defend his column, following some criticism, before Fred read some emails and the guys went into some further draft prospect talk.

The show came to a close following some emails including an email from Mark in Cheddar reminded the guys about the Scalavino v Gostkowski kicking challenge.

03/05/09 - TO to show?

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 5, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Terrell Owens

Following the ‘Top Gun’ opening Fred began the show asking whether I am still updating PFWinProgress.com because there hasn’t been any activity for the last few weeks. Coincidentally today’s show marks the first time I’ve been able to update live due to a busy period in my job. Anyway, enough about me, back to the show. The guys talked about the reports that the Cowboys had released TO which brought up a debate whether he was over-rated and who was the better receiver TO or Moss.

The guys then talked about a post that Erik made on the PFW blog about Rihanna and how he shouldn’t be talking about non-football related issues which in turn turned into a debate about fans enjoying “the nonsense” again. Andrew from the Ukraine called in, from the US, to talk about the potential signing of free agent Julius Peppers. He likened it to the signing of Adalius Thomas before asking a draft related question about how the tie breaker works.

Paul then brought up a few recent articles that he didn’t agree with before regular caller John in LA called in. Fred then announced the news that John in LA will be penning a weekly column on Patriots.com. Congratulations John, that’s great news. John then ignited a discussion about the Cassel/Vrabel trade and how, after thinking about it, he believes it to be a good value trade.

Fred then talked about some exciting new features that will appear on Patriots.com which Paul will be in charge of, something which Mr Perillo thought was too much for one person.

Following a break the guys talked about the free agents that have visited the Patriots in the last few years with the news that veteran WR Joey Galloway visited Gilette Stadium. All the guys agreed that the Patriots had to sign a WR to fill the void left by Jabar Gaffney whether he was a ‘jag’ or not.

The guys then brought up Erik’s post, which Erik offered to delete, before Paul told the guys he’s starting his vacation with a trip to Richmond, VA to watch his beloved North Eastern. This obviously brought upon some ribbing from the guys. Following an email the guys talked about the Cassel/Vrabel trade and whether Vrabel would have been cut if he wasn’t trading.

Andy expressed worry about one of the Patriots wide receivers, Welker and Moss, picking up an injurydue to them being the cornerstone of the Patriots offense and how they have virtually played every snap since joining two years ago. Al in Dayton called in to continue the Kansas City trade talk and how trade value was difficult to work out and the value of the Cassel/Vrabel trade can only be evaluated by what the Patriots do with the cap space.

Al expressed his delight at the trade for Fred Taylor which the guys all agreed with before he took pleasure in the Broncos problems with their QB Jay Cutler. The guys played Mikey Vandalism’s latest mp3 offering which, following a diss to Jason in Chiba, asked the guys about what round the Patriots will draft a wide receiver.

The guys then played James Pettigrew’s mp3 also dissed Jason in Chiba with a Stephen Hawking-esque voice and told Jason to tell his wife to come to Cambridge and he’d show her his big bang theory. The guys then talked about the upcoming visit by the Dalai Lama to Gillette Stadium, read a couple of emails before Andy gave his Urban Dictionary Word of the Day.

Lunch-buyer Chris with a tian emailed in to express his hate for T.O. and how he doesn’t want him to be a Patriot before the guys talked about the potential places that T.O. could go and the Cowboys. Anthony in Naples called in to join the T.O. discussion saying how Owens would be a cancer in the locker room.

The show came to a close following some emails including one from Matt in Connecticut slammed Andy for his paragraph usage in the latest Ask PFW.
