01/29/09 - Brazillian Kryptonite

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 29, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Tom Brady and Giselle Bundchen

Fred opened the show with talk about yesterday’s heavy weather which led to Erik divulging that Patriots.com webmaster Chris Ferreira didn’t make it into work yesterday and was surprised to find out that he was the only one. The guys talked about the current Matt Cassel situation, following his recent appearance at the Tampa Convention Center, where he was part of a Gatorade promotion leading up to Super Bowl XLIII before talking in depth about the reports that Patriots QB Tom Brady had begun throwing footballs and was apparently on track for the beginning of the 09 season.

The guys then argued about a previously mentioned article about franchising Cassel before Paul mentioned Wes Welker’s appearance on Mike and Mike. Michael in Puerto Rico called in to talk about the guys’ semantic argument and asked what position the guys would like to acquire to which the guys argued between safety and cornerback before agreeing that the secondary, in general, needed strengthening.

Following a break Fred contended that Brady will be under a microscope, much more than usual, right through to the season opener before Mike in Sharon called in to talk about Nick Caserio and share his thought that the Patriots would go after Eagles safety Brian Dawkins in the off season. An email from Russell in the OC, which Paul left for the Big Show midway though, brought up the photos of Brady and Giselle (or the Brazilian Kryptonite as he called her) “canoodling” poolside and said that he doubted his desire.

Erik stuck up for Brady before an email from Sarah expressed some worries about Floyd Reece’s drafting skills after she found out he drafted the trouble Adam ‘PacMan’ Jones. An email from the uniquely named Mikey Vandalism talked about the guys’ positional snapshot on Patriots.com, which yesterday was safety, and gave a shout out to Paul ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald of TownieNews.com fame before Matt from Oregon called in to talk about a point Erik made about the tackling in the NFL .

01/27/09 - Fighting in Fuddruckers

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 27, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fuddruckers

With another mixed-up lunch, the guys took shots at Tugender who, in turn, took shots at an “incompetent listener” for getting the order wrong. Fred asked the guys if they thought he should be offended that his son asked if he could ride the bus to school today instead of getting a ride from Fred. The guys talked briefly about the Super Bowl Media Day and how it couldn’t possibly top last year before Fred offered some ideas on how to make it more special. The guys then talked about the gentleman’s establishments in the Tampa Bay area before moving on to some Patriots talk including reports that Bill Belichick would be doing the offensive play calling in the 09 season. They also talked about the Patriots tight end coach Pete Mangurian who has left to be the offensive line coach in Tampa Bay.

Following a break the guys talked about the current economic climate which prompted Fred to talk about an idea he had to create Walmart “satellite stores” in some of the other stores that have been closed. Paul then told a story about a fight he managed to get himself into whilst having lunch with his family in Fuddruckers. John in LA called in to ask about the Patriots coaching assistants and the seemingly huge success the Patriots have in finding good ones.

An email from Mitch asked if the guys thought the Patriots would draft some tight ends or wide receivers as they don’t have much depth after Moss and Welker before an email from lunch buyer John in South Carolina asked about the routes people could take to get into scouting. The guys talked about the pictures of Tom Brady canoodling poolside with Giselle which brought up a discussion about Brady and his apparent dislike of the limelight. Chris with a tian called in to continue the Brady discussion saying that he didn’t think he should be acting that way, despite being his biggest fan. Andy joked that Brady couldn’t be having sex because guys act like that when they are trying to “get into a girl’s pants”.

Fred cut the next break short to break the news that the Patriots have hired Floyd Reese, the former general manager of the Tennessee Titans, as senior football advisor. He read a statement from Robert Kraft which said “Floyd will be a tremendous asset serving Coach Belichick in an advisory role.” The guys talked in depth about Reese and the hiring before talking about another announcement that Nick Caserio will manage the daily operations of the personnel department.

An email from Paul in New Jersey ignited a discussion about the Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister, who is expected to be cut in the off-season, and whether he’d be a target for the Patriots before Fred read out an email that asked if the Patriots could franchise Matt Cassel as a punter with his punting exploits during the last game of the season against Buffalo. Paul from London emailed in to ask the guys which team the guys are looking forward to playing most next season.

Steve in New Hampshire called in about Rex Ryan’s comments when he was announced as the Jets Head Coach and his joy when Rodney Harrison said he hated the Steelers on the NFL Network. The guys talked again about the potential uncapped year the NFL could face before an emailer offered a new Urban Dictionary word.

The guys closed the show with some draft talk and Kimani’s email about the guys being jealous of Brady and Giselle.

01/22/09 - Poofy jacket

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 22, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Paul Perillo as Mike Tomlin

Fred welcomed back Andy to the show following his absence from Tuesday’s show, due to his gastric ‘issues’, before talking about googling PFW in Progress and how he was astonished at the reach of the show. The guys then talked about the speculation about Bill O’Brien becoming the Patriots Offensive Coordinator before talking about Tom Brady’s appearance on Toronto radio station FAN590. Erik explained the reasons behind the somewhat odd choice of show for Brady to mark his first interview since his injury before ‘Tugee’ played a clip of Brady talking about his rehab.

Al in Georgia called in to express his disgust that the Cardinals, who the Patriots beat by 40 points, are going to the Superbowl. Fred chimed in with the thought that if the Cardinals win the SuperBowl, Patriots fans can sleep better in the knowledge that they are better than them. Al also touched upon the 50th anniversary of the AFL, bringing up some memories of the Patriots playing in Fenway Park, and asked what merchandise the Patriots would be bringing out to commemorate the anniversary. Andy thought it would be cool if the original tri-corner logo would be used and how it would increase the merchandise sales because, as Paul said, “Nostalgia is big”. John in LA called in with “a series of quick questions” which led to the point that the Patriots will be a more improved outfit in 09 than in 08 and a discussion about the improvements Josh McDaniels made during his time in New England.

Following a break, Andy brought up the movement that is calling to ban Britney Spears’ contentious new single ‘If You Seek Amy’ before, the star of the previous show, Michael from Puerto Rico called in to talk about the maturity and eloquence of Josh McDaniels and woundered whether anything could have been done to keep him in New England. This led to a discussion about the Head Coach in waiting idea that happens a lot in college and was seen in Indianapolis and Seattle this year. An email from Jaxobin started a discussion about O’Connell starting the 09 season if Cassel is traded and Brady isn’t fit enough to start week one. The guys dismissed the idea and thought that the Patriots would need a veteran presence with Paul naming Jeff Garcia as the ideal candidate.

Anthony in Naples called in to say that Tuesday’s show was the worst one he has heard in five years of listening which led to a dig at Tugender for not cutting the callers off early enough. Anthony also re-ignited Tuesday’s discussion of the possibility of Julius Peppers joining the Patriots as a free agent. Tugee played the previously mentioned Britney Spears song which all the guys thought shouldn’t be on the radio. The guys then discussed the NFL’s decision to play the Pro Bowl the week before the Super Bowl in the same location, moving it away from Hawaii, a decision that the guys all disagreed with. Paul talked about watching the Northeastern Huskies “big win” over their basketball rivals George Mason before another emailer criticised Tuesday’s show. Three emails from listeners in the UK followed before the guys discussed an email from Bob which enquired about the Patriots interest in Phil Savage who served as Director of Player Personnel for the Baltimore Ravens and what positions the guys thought the Patriots would draft.

Following a break, the guys talked about the good drafts the Patriots have made and how Kevin Colbert, the Director of Football Operations of the Pittsburgh Steelers, is one of the most underrated people in sports. The guys then talked about how well the Steelers have drafted since Colbert has been there. All this Steelers talk led Fred to mention a jacket, that Paul had for Christmas, that had an inside like Mike Tomlin’s “poofy” jacket which the guys put a Steelers logo on it as a prank. Fred got the (in)famous Ken Flanders on the phone to talk merchandise and he said that they wouldn’t be bringing out any merchandise with the tri-corner logo on it.

Paul brought up some draft eligibility questions before a vitriolic email from Pat said that the fluky 08 NFL season all occurred because Tom Brady, “the best player on the planet”  went down in week one and the other teams thought they no longer had to “keep up with the greatness anymore”. Stephen from Oregon called in to take a shot at Erik, give praise to Erik, talk about the weather and refer to himself in the third person. All done with his usual joviality and his regular plug to the Patriots.mobi website.

Fred read an email from Chris with a tian which discussed Brady’s radio appearance and the Super Bowl matchup of the Steelers and Cardinals, declaring that he’d be rooting for the Cards as he hates the Steelers (no reason Paul). Andy brought up the news that Miller would be airing a one-second advert during Super Bowl XLIII which led to an discussion about advertising with Andy saying that he thinks Coke should stop advertising.

1/20/09 - The Michael in Puerto Rico Show

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 20, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Following the Rudy introduction, Erik opened the show with the announcement that Fred wouldn’t be hosting the show today due to his supposed participation in the inauguration of Barack Obama which coincided with today’s PFW in Progress. Paul announced that Andy wouldn’t take part in the show for the entirely different reason of a stomach problem. Paul questioned how many people woudl be listening to the show due to the trifecta of the inauguration and the absence of Andy and Fred.

The guys talked about the loss of Dom Capers who was announced as the Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator before talking about the AFC and NFC Championship games and Kurt Warner’s Hall of Fame merits. They also talked about the Cardinals chances against the seemingly superior Steelers in the Super Bowl and likened it to last year’s matchup. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco were given credit for getting their teams to the playoffs and how Roethlisberger should have had a monumental game against the Ravens. They brought up the Ryan Clarke hit on Willis McGahee, how the officiating was very questionable this year and the style of hitting in the NFL.

They discussed the fact that Julius Peppers wants out of Carolina and how he has said he wants to play in a 3-4 system and whether a trade for Cassel could be worked out. Paul said that his football positives would make him an obvious choice for the Patriots but thought that the price he would command would be too high for the Patriots. Michael in Puerto Rico called in to tell the guys how he enjoyed the show as he found it’s dynamic similar to his family’s in that he and his brother rag on his father and he has a gay brother to which Erik was quick to point out that the show could therefore bear no comparison to Michael’s family. He told the guys of the reasons why he is a Patriots fan before asking the guys if Julius Peppers was big enough for the 3-4 and believed that the Patriots couldn’t go into next season without being a defensive juggernaut due to the amount of picks they have in the draft.

Following a break the guys talked briefly about Erik’s training for the forthcoming kicking challenge against Stephen Gostkowski before reading out an email from Sara who called the guys “professional” to the dismay of Erik and Paul. Scott in Tucson called in to talk about the Cardinals making it to the Super Bowl before telling the guys about his bachelor party which included getting slapped in the chest by a dancer onstage in a “gentleman’s club”. The guys, wondering where Fred was, talked about the inauguration of Barack Obama and how it’s “a big day for the nation, a big day for the world and a big day for PFW in Progress” before talking briefly about the Matt Cassel situation and what quarterbacks were scheduled to be free agents.

Fred arrived “back from the inauguration” to Erik’s “The dyn will be fine in 09″ slogan which Fred promptly shot it down giving his own “Everything will be fine in 2009″. This raised the question of whether the Patriots are a dynasty or not before Salt called in, who was tired of the Obama coverage, to let the guys know what a ‘dime piece’ was and to get some positivity from Fred because he was down due to the McDaniels and Pioli losses.

Steve from Winchester called in to ask whether a team would have to disclose who their co-ordinators were and if they could keep it a secret as to not lose them to Head Coaching positions at other teams. Bryan from Brighton called in to offer his thoughts on the question, posed on a previous show, whether the Arizona Cardinals were the worst team Super Bowl participant and re-ignited the Julius Peppers discussion. Fred likened the Cardinals to the 85 Patriots and thought that the Steelers could be their Bears and blow them out in the Super Bowl.

Steve in New Hampshire, a Patriots Football Weekly subscriber, called in to give the guys credit for the paper and to ask the guys a trivia question of “Who is the original Patriots #11″. Paul obviously said that there was only one #11, Drew Bledsoe, but Steve gave the correct answer which was Butch Songin.

Following some emails the show ended with a lengthy discussion about draft eligibility

01/15/09 - Hungarian Goulash

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 15, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fred opened the show with the announcement that Scott Pioli was announced as GM of the Kansas City Chiefs and the decisions he has to make including whether to keep Head Coach Herm Edwards on board. The guys talked about other coaching moves around the NFL, and their links to the Patriots. They also spoke about Scott O’Brien who joined the Patriots, from the Broncos, as special teams coach before talking about  the emphasis the Patriots put on special teams.

Erik brought up the news that USC QB Mark Sanchez would make himself eligible for the NFL draft and Andy chimed in that Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree declared himself eligible. Andy was pretty down on Crabtree saying he was all about the “star” factor which would make him a perfect fit in Dallas.

Following a break the guys brought up the kicking challenge between Erik and Stephen Gostkowski with Erik saying he was going to be practising on a local school field. This brought up a discussion about the amount of money schools are spending on their football fields.

John in LA called in to talk about the Patriots building a dynamic defense and the potential free agents that would help bolster the defense. John also brought up the quotes from LaDainian Tomlinson who dismissed the trade rumours surrounding him as “ridiculous”.

John in Palm Bay called in and asked the guys what they thought of the prospect of the Patriots drafting a left tackle to move Matt Light to right tackle. Both Andy and Paul thought that this was a very realistic possibility. Shane from Costa Rica emailed in with “a bone to pick” with Paul who made a disparaging comment, in a previous show, about Shane’s alma mater Florida State. He also invoked a discussion about the Patriots schedule due to his discontent that the Patriots are again travelling to Indy for the third successive season.

Scott from Tucson called in to talk about the crop of QBs in the draft with Sam Bradford deciding to stay in college before asking the guys their advice on marriage because he’s soon to be wed. He also offered Fred a recipe for Hungarian Goulash.

Matt from Quincy’s email sparked a conversation about Bill Belichick’s coaching tree and of the success rate of the Patriots coaches moving on to higher positions elsewhere.

Following another break, the guys touched briefly on Hungarian Goulash before an email from Kimani invoked Erik’s anger about a new urban dictionary definition of Scalavino. An email from Reed from the Cape which said this season was Bill’s fifth best not the first or second like some people have been saying because they didn’t achieve as much as in previous years.

An email from Dana in Colorado mentioned that he couldn’t listen live anymore because his work’s computers didn’t allow RealPlayer. This brought up the announcement from Fred that they would soon be broadcasting PFW in Progress using Flash tehnology instead of RealPlayer.

Mark from Cheddar emailed in with some sarcastic talk about re-signing Lonnie Paxton before Chris with a tian emailed in to talk about Scott Pioli’s re-building process at Kansas City Chiefs and how he thinks Herm Edwards is long gone. Whilst checking the “bottom was the same as the top”, Fred read an email out from Sara who thought that Bill Belichick’s reputation had recovered following the spygate scandal of last year.

Joel in Merrimack emailed in to describe his hatred for Eli and Peyton Manning for Paul but lost him when describing the feeling he gets watching a Manning fail as akin to having a child. This led to a Fred and Paul argument about what a “proper fan” is.

1/13/09: Do yourself a treat

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 13, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fred opened today’s show in a positive mood despite the Patriots not playing in the postseason before praising Paul for getting his son into the original Star Wars. The guys then talked about the announcement that Patriots Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Josh McDaniels was named Head Coach of Denver Broncos before moving onto the apparent holdup in the talks between Scott Pioli and the Kansas City Chiefs before moving onto the other coaching moves around the NFL. They then talked briefly about who they were rooting for in the remainding playoff games with Fred giving various reasons on who he wouldn’t be rooting for. Paul asked the listeners if the Cardinals, should they beat the Eagles, would be the worst Superbowl participant ever.

The guys then moved onto who they thought would replace Josh McDaniels as Offensive Coordinator. Everyone seemed to be in agreement that current wide receivers coach Bill O’Brien was favourite. Anthony in Naples called in and continued the OC discussion whilst expressing his disappointment at McDaniels’ decision to leave. Anthony also brought up the possibility of Kansas City being a possible destination for Matt Cassel should Scott Pioli get the GM job there. After what seemed like an hour Anthony said goodbye before the guys talked about the potential coaching problem that spreading Bill Belichick too thinly next season would cause.

Erik’s “favourite” emailer Kimani emailed in and brought up Tim Tebow, Erik’s blog and whether Tom Brady’s would lose his edge, or “eye of the tiger”, now he is reported to be engaged to Giselle. An email from initiated a discussion about the poor state of officiating in the NFL this year before Stephen from Oregon called in to talk further about the Josh McDaniels situation and the potential return of Romeo Crennel. A first time emailer, and soon-to-be first time father, Jeff in Alberta congratulated the guys for a great season of entertainment and asked for some paternal advice from the fathers on the show.

Chris with a tian called in to talk about the coaching moves and how he believes the Patriots will be ready for any personnel loss and brought up the team’s secondary problems whilst talking about Dom Capers.  Fred brought up the news that Tony Dungy retired as Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts before TG in NJ emailed in to answer Paul’s question about the worst SuperBowl participant. He said the worst winner was the 2000 Ravens which the guys didn’t agree with. The weekly Andy’s shoe bashing from Fred took place before an email from Dermot in Ireland enquired about a PFW in Progress meetup in London ahead of the Patriots Buccaneers game next year.

The show came to an end following an email which brought up the question whether the guys thought that Tony Dungy would get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This then initiated a discussion on the coaches that are already in the Hall of Fame with Fred saying that Belichick should get “his own wing”.

1/8/09 - Coke vs Pepsi

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 8, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Today’s show opened with a new disclaimer so “they wouldn’t get in any trouble” as Dan said before moving on to some Pepsi talk which became a discussion about what’s better Coke or Pepsi. Fred, being a Coke fan, said Pepsi was for “little kids and paedophiles”. A bit harsh, considering that Pepsi is a Patriots sponsor, but I’d have to agree with him that it’s better. The guys then moved on to football and continued the various talks about moves, trades and the like with the news that Eric Mangini is the new Cleveland Browns Head Coach.

Following some talk about Josh McDaniels’ opportunities and how they may not be there next year, John in LA called in with a good comment about having another year with Brady before the guys continued the discussion and how Denver is looking more likely to be McDaniels’ destination. Lunch-buyer Chris with a tian emailed the guys with some questions about last year’s postseason moves and if they thought they were successful moves or not. An email brought up potential destinations for Matt Cassel next season before Andy took a shot at Fred about reading emails slowly to which Fred retaliated with a shot at Andy’s shoes.

New emailer Emilia emailed in her undying love for Dan before Andy let slip that Erik is going to play a field goal challenge with Pro Bowl Kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

1/6/09 - Happy Birthday Erik

Posted by James in Wales on Jan 6, 2009 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fred opened the first show of 2009 with a happy new year and a happy birthday to Erik who was 36 today. Happy Birthday from PFWinProgress.com Mr Scalavino. The guys then moved onto football with some talk about Scott Pioli interviewing with Cleveland and Kansas CIty. This led to talk about the various vacancies in the NFL before some talk about Boston College football coach Jeff Jagodzinski who is rumoured to be interviewing for the New York Jets head coaching job with the threat of being fired hanging over his head.

John in LA called in to talk about the likely possibility of franchising Cassel which the guys discussed at length about the trade possibilities that franchising Cassel would bring before an email from Pete in Hoboken about the report that LB Tedy Bruschi would like to come back next season to honour his contract (if the Patriots want him). Paul wasn’t that happy with this news as he’d like to see the Patriots get another Jerod Mayo which led Andy to talk about still having a Stanley Morgan jersey from the 80s before the guys talked about the past weekend’s playoff games. An emailer brought up Fred’s favourite topic ‘The Hall at Patriot Place (presented by Raytheon)’ which the guys promised Fred they’d go and see next week, once they’d put the season review Patriots Football Weekly to bed.

The guys talked about the potential coaching moves that could take place this off season and who would replace McDaniels if he did leave. ‘Hot’ Emily emailed in about overtime and if Bill Polian would want to change the rules this season following the Colts’ OT playoff loss to the Chargers. The guys talked in depth about Scott Pioli and if he would leave for one of the three positions he has reported to have interviewed for. Paul thought that he would be staying at the Patriots because he believes he would have made a decision by now if he was leaving.

Following a break Todd in Nova Scotia emailed in with a double-edged sword to wish Erik a happy birthday and to say that Erik’s voice made him queasy due to an incident while listening to Erik’s (in)famous solo show. The guys then read out the winners of the PFWinProgress.com awards as devised by forum member Paul in London and voted for by the other forum members. The results can be found in the PFWinProgress.com forum.

Chris with a tian called in with some anger about the seemingly endless franchising Cassel talk and how it sucked that the Patriots weren’t in the playoffs whilst there were some pretty bad football teams playing in the playoffs this weekend. He also brought up the MVP award and if it should be decided after the playoffs or as it is now which turned into a heated discussion about how Patriots fans hate Peyton Manning.

Following Andy’s word of the day the guys talked briefly about Rodney Harrison’s appearance on the NFL Network before the show winded down to a close after an email brought up a discussion about potential Patriots draft decisions.
