12/30/08 - Pretty fly for a white guy

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 30, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

The offseason schedule began today, following the Patriots falling short in the hunt for a playoff place, with talk about the potential coaching moves including Scott Pioli, Josh McDaniels, Eric Mangini and Romeo Crenel. Fred then mentioned the former Pats beat reporter Tom Curran who wrote that Brady’s recovery from his knee injury is “well behind schedule” on NBCSports.com. Fred brought up Paul’s continuing media whoring with an invite to appear on Comcast despite his solo appearance on WEEI today.

The guys then brought up the win at Buffalo and the extraordinary weather conditions and how the Patriots’ season was remarkable following all the injuries and how they were only one or two plays away from the playoff. The guys then talked about how the Jets let us down when we needed them to come through and the sacking of Mangini. They also talked about how poorly Brett Favre played and his lack of mobility didn’t help them towards the end of the regular season. Chris with a tian called in with the thought that the season was “interesting”, how he would have taken 11-5 in week two and is looking forward to 09. Fred then made the call that the Patriots would win it all in 09, like someone once said “Book it!”.

Following a break Mike from San Francisco called in and brought up a discussion about life after Tom Brady and how Josh McDaniels was instrumental this year. The guys then talked about the news that the 2010 Pro Bowl would take place a week before the SuperBowl in Miami, and not Hawaii before emailer Tammy in New York called Andy “pretty good looking for a white guy” after seeing him on the PFW TV show on NECN. Brian from Brighton called in to talk about NFL QBs and their apparent penchant for tongue rings, give props to Erik and to express disappointment with Randy Moss.

An email brought up the Patriots 09 draft and what compensatory picks they would get before Andy joined the show. Steven in Oregon then called in and brought up Fred winning the picks competition on the show (but not here on PFWinProgress.com) before the guys talked briefly about the Cowboys. Following a call from Burtoni the guys briefly broke down the season and how disappointing it was that the team played so well in December and wouldn’t be able to carry the form into the post-season.

12/17/08 - From Ireland with love

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 17, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Following another opening shot at Erik, who wasn’t in attendance, Fred opened the show with (yesterday’s) news that Wes Welker and Stephen Gostkowski were voted into the Pro Bowl to represent the AFC. Fred was obviously happy about this but obviously less so than the news that Brett Favre was among seven New York Jets players who made the Pro Bowl. Following some locker room activity, the guys talked more in depth about the Pro Bowl and which players they agrees, or more often disagreed with.

After the break Fred introduced today’s special guest, Cormac from Ireland, who told the guys that he had been coming to visit family in Foxboro since he was four years old and Patriots fandom was ingrained in him. Cormac was quizzed about his thoughts on the Patriots season so far and Fred asked if he thought Favre should have gone to the Pro Bowl. He then gave out some gifts courtesy of him and Paul in London which went down really well. Mike in Sharon called in to expressed his disgust about Favre’s Pro Bowl nod before Fred sang a twelve days of christmas poem from Chris in the Bronx, about the Patriots 08 season.

Following a break Anthony in Naples called in with a techinical question about workarounds for listening to PFW in Progress live on his iPhone. Fred then quizzed Cormac about his soccer knowledge, Tom Brady’s fame in Ireland before Erik joined the show to the usual shots from Fred and Andy. He then gave his practise report which included three players missing (Teddy Bruschi, James Sanders and Matt Light) and Matthew Slater switching from offense to defense.

Cormac then gave Erik his gifts of a pink ‘My fairy drawing book’, an ‘Amazing Egypt-o-ram pop up book’ and some ‘Jelly willies’ which didn’t go down as well as the other guy’s gifts (Erik was actually a good sport). Following an email about the Pro Bowl the guys talked about their selection issues with Brett Favre being the main gripe.

The show ended following a quick chat with John Rook who was about to start his Patriots Playbook show.

12/16/08 - Alcohol from ‘Alabama’ Anthony

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 16, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

The guys began the show talking about Asante Samuel’s supposed dropped pick 6 in the endzone before talking about the Patriots 49-26 win over the Raiders. They touched on Cassel playing after losing his father before praising the running game, Matt Light’s injury and looked ahead to the forthcoming home game against the Cardinals. Fred also brought up a humourous story concerning Paul almost missing the flight to Oakland to which Paul blamed Italian discrimination because they mispelled his name on his boarding card.

John in LA called in and immediately got into a beef with Andy before bringing up JP Losman’s ridiculous fourth quarter play in the Bills loss to the Jets. He also had a great idea about possible ‘Best of PFW’ podcasts from stand out moments in Patriots history. Fred suggested Andy likes Erik a lot more than he lets on following the two of them looking happy having breakfast together in Oakland and sharing a blanket on the flight home. Dave from the Philippines called in as he was preparing to fly back to the States for the holidays and ignited a discussion about the Jets and Miami and who are playing best at the moment.

The guys thanked Anthony in Naples for his gifts that seemingly went astray and ended up in the hands of Bryan Morry in the Hall at Patriot Place (presented by Raytheon). Following a break an email brought up a discussion about the shocking state of the Oakland Raiders franchise. Alcohol provider Anthony in Naples called in, to much gratitude, and continued the Raiders discussion by saying JaMarcus Russell was unfortunate to be overhyped in college and how Al Davies should be committed.

After talking about the Patriots’ potential routes into the playoffs and this Sunday’s game against the Cardinals with Paul and Andy both thinking it could easily go either way. Andy spoke briefly about the reports that Buffalo Bills’ head coach Dick Jauron has signed a three-year extension to his contract.

With the announcement of who’s going to the Pro Bowl expected on Tuesday the guys spoke about the possibility of which players will be representing the Patriots. As well as the players who were nominated by the fans, the guys brought up Welker and Cassel who should be in contention.

The show ended with the guys being joined by Patriots Playbook host John Rook to talk about Florida Gators wide receiver Percy Harvin as a potential 2009 Patriots draft pick. This was followed by Andy’s announcement that people in the league are mentioning Tim Tebow as a potential Patriot before the guys left to do their NECN show.

12/11/08 - Andy drops an F-Bomb

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 11, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Following a dig at Erik for not being on the show, but was working out on the West Coast, Fred opened today’s show with the sombre announcement that Matt Cassel’s father had died in his mobile home in California. The guys spoke about the possibility of Cassel not playing against the Raiders with Andy thinking that he would be criticised if he chose not to. James in North Carolina (one of the oldest and most loyal listeners as Paul said) called in with some thoughts on the Patriots’ playoff possibilities. Paul thought that there was a reasonable chance that the Patriots could get in either way with Andy saying it wasn’t an ideal situation to be in.

Following some confusion, from Fred of course, over the Qdoba question of the week rules Anthony from Naples called in to answer the Qdoba question. After telling the guys he was buying them presents the outcome was never going to be anything but a correct answer. Following lots of help from the guys Anthony correctly answered “What was the name of the place the guy spent their Saturday night in Seattle?” which was the Owl and Thistle. Paul spoke about his recent ‘Big Show’ appearance and how they spent a bit of time arguing with a listener about how a good defensive line is overrated and how many decent tight ends there are in the league.

Chris in Seattle called in to say thankyou to the guys for joining in the Seattle pre-game festivities at the Owl and Thistle. Following some back and forth digging between Tugender and Paul, an email from Paul in London made Fred say ‘Dildo’ before the tight end argument was brought up again. An email from Ping Pong brought up a moment in a recent Patriots Playbook which alluded to Erik’s romantic meeting in Egypt.

Following a break, the guys went back to the Wes Welker argument and whether he is ‘nice little player’ or something more. An email brought up the question whether the guys should wear a suit jacket when they are on the NECN show to which Andy pointed out he wanted to be comfortable. This was followed by talk of an internet report about Brady’s knee situation to which Andy accidentally dropped an F-Bomb. An emailer calling out Paul started a heated discussion about what record the guys thought the Patriots would have when Brady went down.

With 20 minutes of the show left Fred rushed to get to the picks, which can be found here.

12/09/08 - Happy 40th Chris from the Bronx

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 9, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

The guys opened today’s show talking about their recent trip to Seattle and how Fred is in trouble with Mr Kraft for not having any coverage of the fans gathering in Seattle that the big boss turned up to. Let’s hope this settles down because the last thing we want is Fred being in trouble with the powers that be. We all know he’s the glue holding PFW together. The guys then went into the great comeback win against the Seahawks, broke the news that the Arizona game will stay at a 1pm kickoff and how Teddy Bruschi returned to Boston to have scans on his knee. Andy mentioned that some people have mentioned that he may be put on IR.

Following Paul’s announcement that he went all out and bought a $900 HD video camera before Shannon from Seattle called in with a great story about wearing a throwback Mosi Tatupu jersey to the game on Sunday and meeting Momma T (Mosi’s wife and Lofa’s Mom). Following talk about the guys free time in Seattle (a very English sounding) James in New Hampshire called in to talk about how the guys felt about the win and how he thought the Patriots wouldn’t follow last year’s Giants and catch lightning in a bottle at the tail end of the season. Just before taking a break Fred read a very emotional email from Arsenios who said PFW in Progress provided a welcome relief during a difficult time in his life.

Following a break Fred told an embarassing story about a bathroom incident involving him having his pants around his ankles trying to find toilet paper which preceded lunch being delivered courtesy of Skipjacks in Patriots Place. This obviously prompted a “quick, quick break”. After the “quick, quick break” Fred promoted a Skipjacks offer before John in LA called in to share his thoughts on the Seatlle game and to take a quick dig at Erik. Following some talk about Paul’s hatred of dogs JD emailed in to say that he enjoyed meeting the guys in Seattle.

Following an email about last week’s vote on PFWinProgress.com the guys talked about the ways the Patriots can get into the playoffs and .

12/04/08 - Steve Thursday

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 4, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fred opened the show with an announcement that, along with the usual Qdoba question of the week, they would be giving away two tickets to a 3D showing of tonight’s NFL game between the Chargers and Raiders at Cinema Deluxe in Patriots Place (presented by Raytheon). The guys talked briefly about the locker room activity, including a sighting of Lawrence Maroney, before Andy talked about an appearance on a Seattle radio he made. Fred gave his review of No Country for (the) Old Men which he thought was “tremendous” before Paul mentioned that Andy tried to talk to Randy Moss in the locker room to no avail.

John in LA called in to accuse Fred of saying Plaxico Burress deserved what happened to him, in yesterday’s show, was meant intentionally because he scored the winning touchdown at the Superbowl. Fred adamantly denied this before John was blown up for using innapropriate language that Fred repeated shortly after. Chris with a tian called in with the fantastic news that his father’s biopsy came back negative (give him the all the best from PFWinProgress.com) and to talk about the Patriots injuries and the shortcomings of the squad’s depth being a major factor this season.

Andy came up with a question to win the tickets for the NFL game in 3D which was ‘Who are the Oakland Raiders starting wide receivers?’. John in Seattle called in, not to answer the question but, to offer the guys something to do Saturday in Seattle. Arty in New Hampshire called in to try and win the tickets but only got one of the two answers correct before Steve in Seattle, called in to let Patriots fans know where there would be a a huge Patriots tailgate before the game in Seattle. If you are interested it would be Saturday night at the Owl & Thistle and prior to the game on Sunday will be at the Showbox SoDo. If you do go to any of these events, email me the pictures and I’ll post them to this site. Arty emailed in the correct answer and won the NFL 3D Premiere tickets, congratulations Arty, let us know how it was on the forums.

Anthony in Naples called in to have a go at Andy about his comments concerning Cassel inheriting the greatest offence ever which led to a lengthy discussion about the pressure on Cassel now as opposed to the pressure Brady faced in 01. Erik joined the show before Steve in Oregon called in to try and hook up with the guys in Seatlle before Steve from the Cape correctly answered the Qdoba question of the day which was ‘How many children does Steven from Oregon have?’

Following today’s Urban Dictionary Word of the Day Joel in Merrimack called in to ask about Rosevelt Colvin and how he has looked in practise and about how thin the Patriots linebacking core is. With 30 minutes of the show left Fred rushed to get to the picks, which can be found here.

12/03/08 - Welcome back Rosie

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 3, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fred and Andy opened the show with digs at Paul for being inducted into the BU Baseball Hall of Fame and for being outside waiting for pizza to which Dan joined in with his own dig by asking “What’s new?”. Andy announced the news that Rosevelt Colvin re-signed for the Patriots, due to the injuries to Pierre Woods and Adalius Thomas, and about the possibility of Wes Welker playing against the Seahawks. This led to a discussion of how important Wes Welker is to the offense and how Jabar Gaffney isn’t good enough to fill in. Paul believed that the coaches wouldn’t change the offense using the argument that they didn’t change things when Brady went down.

Andy brought up something that webmaster Chris Ferreira mentioned about thinking that Plaxico Burress would be able to pay $35 million to make all his charges go away. This led to the guys talking about the Plaxico Burress incident and how he had been suspended. Following talk about the NECN show and how well Fred did with a chat that will be broadcast Friday the guys spoke about Paul and Andy’s alma mater, Everett High and Dartmouth High respectively, both losing their games meaning that neither would be competing for the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

Following a break the guys read a couple of emails before talking about Lamont Jordan’s continual sleeping in the locker room with Andy mentioning that he doesn’t fit in and has never seen him talk to his teammates. The guys then talked briefly about Cassel’s value before Matt from Connecticut called in to call out Andy about his comments about last year’s offense being overrated. This then brought up the Wes Welker ‘good little player’ debate in which an argument ensued between Paul and Andy which also added Kevin Faulk’s value into the mix with Paul saying that Andy never gives #33 credit.

Erik joined the show for a brief cameo to give his practise update before an emailer brought up Seymour’s lack of play on third down against the Steelers. Paul brought up a conversation between Gil Santos and Andy following Gil discovering Andy went to Dartmouth High. John in LA called in to say that he was still on the Patriots bandwagon before it was Urban Dictionary Word of the Day time.

Stephen from Oregon called in and asked about Welker’s availability and next season’s game in London before John Rook called in to congratulate Paul for getting into the BU Baseball Hall of Fame and to say that Warren Moon would be joining him on Patriots Playbook.

12/02/08 - London baby!

Posted by James in Wales on Dec 2, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fred opened today’s show with the fantastic announcement that the Patriots will play in London next season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Wembley Stadium before touching on Sunday’s loss to the Steelers. Paul and Andy joined the show and were surprisingly upbeat about the London trip saying that it was the same distance to the West Coast as the UK but they get to see another country. I’m sure Mr Kraft wished some of the players felt the same way following some of their comments which Andy mentioned. The guys then broke down the loss to the Steelers and how it unravelled so quickly following the half, the turnovers were obviously brought up and how Slater’s muffed return was probably the only self inflicted error the others were caused.

They mentioned how the Patriots’ injuries are beginning to affect them with Welker and Woods going down and how the Patriots are 0-3 without Warren. Kevin Faulk was given some serious props by the guys, mostly by Andy who admitted his mistake in saying pre-season that his skills were diminishing and nominated Faulk Team MVP with four weeks left. Andy brought up Richard Seymour’s apparent dismay in not playing on third downs during his appearance on Patriots Monday on WEEI and how Mike Reiss pointed out how some experienced guys ‘ran for the hills’ after the game but Matthew Slater hung about and took it on the chin.

Fred began a discussion about the Patriots current playoff chances and how we are chasing the Ravens for a wildcard spot and the Jets for the AFC East top spot. The most important point was that the Patriots need to win all their games to have a chance. Al in Dayton called in to express his disgust at the Steelers game saying ho he turned off the game to play some XBOX prompting Fred to talk about Call of Duty and how his son is getting the new game for Christmas. The guys talked about the late hit on Welker and how Paul thought it was being blown out of proportion in likening it to Jack tatum’s hit on Darryl Stingley but all agreed it was an illegal hit and shouldn’t have happened.

Following a break, the guys spoke about the theoretical possibility of Brady not coming back next year and the annoying Pittsburgh press crew that were at the game Sunday. They touched upon the Plaxico Burress shooting incident before an email from Neil in Nottingham brought up the seemingly unfair schedule that the Patriots face due to the three game stretch where the Patriots’ opposition come off a Thursday night game. Joel in Merrimack called in and brought up an interesting point that even if the Patriots make the playoffs do they have enough to beat a playoff team? Sergeant Rob from Westpoint, NY brought up next years London game, and even coined a slogan for the game ‘Pats and points’, which Fred proposed a live studio audience version of PFW in Progress while in London. Following an argument about HD/non-HD camcorders the guys had another argument about Giselle’s Brazillian heritage (or is it German Fred?).

The show ended with John Rook joining the show and disclosing the fact that he had been on the London Eye. Thanks John!
