3/11/08 - The Mohegan Sun one

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 11, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Erik’s back in the big chair, starting things off with a report (and the obligatory Erik paper shuffle) that the Pats could be interested in trading for Pacman Jones. The guys, sans Fred, all agree that the Pats would make a mistake to bring the malcontent in to Foxboro, but also agree that the Pats have always considered all players, despite the “PR creation” to the contrary. Talk then moves to free agency, and reports that the Pats were interested in restricted free agent linebacker Adam Seward, and how the Pats’ situation at linebacker figures into that possible move. Then it’s on to draft talk and possible wide receiver prospects for the Pats - including a theory from draft guru Tom that the only reason people like Colt McCoy is because he is named Colt instead of Mike. With a shift in discussion to ESPN’s series Playmakers, which was pressured by the NFL into cancellation in 2003, Erik questioned Andy on whether the revelation that one of the characters was gay made him uncomfortable - to which Andy responded that the odds are someone in the studio was gay, and everyone knew who it most likely was.

Then, in a complete 180, Tom questioned why anyone would want to pay $30,000 for a nude photo of Gisele. So we know what Tom does in his free time, but meanwhile, Paul recounts his weekend trip to Richmond, Virginia, where he spent about 20 hours just getting to and from there for a CAA basketball tournament. Paul is questioned on whether he was, well, seeing anyone on his way down there, leading Tom, whose New York knows a bit about client #9, to state that “a lot of guys do it” and that’d he’d try it too if he was rich.

After the break, the guys got into a discussion on whether the “big nickel” (three safeties) package could be a possibility in 2008 - which Andy and Tom thought wouldn’t be a good idea - ditto for the Tampa 2, although they agreed such players are easier to find. After some more draft talk, it was on to a report that the NFL was close to a deal with Matt Walsh, as well as a Bob Hohler piece that seemed to discredit the idea - but Paul still believed it was a cover-up to prevent Belichick from naming other names. It was then back to draft talk, then Jabar Gaffney’s re-signing with the team - all the while, Tom predicts each play of Super Bowl XXX (Cowboys/Steelers) playing on the studio TV. That leads to talk of the NFL Network, which Tom thinks is mismanaged and the content “not that good.” - but there is also news of layoffs at NFL Films and the cancellation of Inside the NFL. Finally, with Erik out of e-mails, Andy told a story of his landscaper recognizing Andy as “that guy on the TV show…the Mohegan Sun one.”

3/6/08 - Getting to the finish line

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 6, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

The Cork Soakers started off their latest show with some talk of the International Date Line before Mini-Gary and Andy got into it over Mini-Gary’s new “Jew-fro,” leading Fred to get on Andy for his fledgling attempt at growing a beard. Lunch arrives, courtesy of Chris Simonelli, then shortly thereafter from Vinny. Fred mentions that he notices Tom holding court with the ladies around his cubicle, using his soft voice, but Tom counters that none of the girls thinks he’s attractive and they’re just gossiping over American Idol and such - however, he shows that his ring “comes off pretty easily.”

Tom then went after a PatsFans.com thread that polls posters on whether they would trade Welker for Chad Johnson; Paul and Tom both read the thread. John from LA, a longtime PatsFans poster weighed in, with a few pointed comments towards PatsFans before moving onto other Pats business. On the heels of John’s call, Dan in Delaware calls in to lament over the Super Bowl loss. We then go live to Brett Favre’s press conference to announce his retirement as the sobbing quarterback is at the podium.

Tom gives his scouting report on the top quarterbacks in the draft after talking about Brady Quinn who supposedly asking for a trade to the Packers. Speaking of quarterbacks, Andy brings up rumors of a video of Brady and Gisele making out in a wine cellar like 15-year olds, prompting a discussion on how Tom hasn’t kissed his wife in a year and on how Andy just wants to “get to the finish line” with his wife. Paul thinks they’d never get away with that on real radio, but Andy thinks they’d be so rich it wouldn’t be funny. Fred changes the subject to the incompetence of the Raiders and Al Davis before the break.

After the break, Matt from Oregon calls in from a stairwell and backs up Erik’s performance last show despite numerous e-mails calling it the worst in history. Matt then offers Andy a slab of elk on his next trip back east, and they go into a discussion on Seymour’s disappointing 2007 season. E-mail time, and Casale goes into some more draft scouting reports. This is followed by an e-mailer calling for Sanders and Hobbs extensions, which Tom scoffs at - “you could find 30 guys in the NFL to do what Ellis Hobbs does.” More draft talk hosted by Tom Casale, with talk on combine numbers and Fred’s nose tackle prospect Jason Shirley. After another break, it’s more draft discussion, then for the second straight week, talk of Erik’s prep school squash play. The show then ends with tampering to Spygate comparisons, which Fred buys into but Paul downplays, before Tom and Erik go at it over the number of push-ups they can do.

3/4/08 - Erik in the chair

Posted by James in Wales on Mar 4, 2008 in PFW in Progress Latest Show

Fred was out today, so Erik hosted the first show since Randy Moss re-signed. After a long discussion on Moss’ contract and the Patriots’ decision not to franchise him, the guys moved onto Samuel’s signing with the Eagles, the Patriots’ cornerback position, and how teams will attack the Pats in 2008. With the news that Andy is (trying) to grow a beard, the discussion turned personal with topics such as Tom’s eligibility to run for President and Fred’s weight problems.

After a call from Rich in Central Florida, who spawned a discussion on Chad Jackson, it was time for some draft talk. The guys deciding that the Jets would probably be where stud, Vernon Gholston would end up. This prompted talk of the Jets’ offseason moves and how teams like the Jets need to attack free agency to catch up with the Patriots. They also announced their draft prospect videos and draft podcasts for the upcoming draft season.

After the break, the guys immediately critiqued Erik’s host performance, which Andy thought was better than his guest spots since he was actually doing something as a host. Brett Favre’s retirement then came up, followed by a look back on his career. Fred waltzes in halfway through the show and is promptly questioned by Erik on the etymological origin of ‘cutting the mustard’. Fred then predicted that the Eagles would finish in fourth place in 2008, while Tom thinks they are the best franchise in the NFC. The guys then delved into a discussion on whether free agency or the draft is the best approach, if the Patriots’ inactivity in free agency is a cause for concern (Fred’s opinion need not be stated), and how the rapidly growing salary cap hurts teams like the Pats.

After Chris Simonelli called in, claiming to have the origin of ‘cutting the mustard’ it was back briefly to salary cap talk, before Erik tried to initiate a discussion on the Pats’ minor free agent signings, which the guys had none of. Tom gives a scouting report on Erik: “He’s quick out of the box, but then he runs out of stamina,” so Fred recommends that he eats some lunch; Erik brought “a salad, fig newtons, and an apple.” In response to an e-mailer’s question on who would win a race, they get into a discussion on Erik’s physical activities (Andy: “You look like you have cancer!”) and his sporting endeavors of yesteryear. After some more draft talk, the show ended with Lori stopping in to announce some cheerleader updates, and talk about Erik’s trip to “Columbine…I mean Combine.” Fred announced NewEnglandFootball.com prompting Erik recalls some hazing stories from his prep school, where Erik fought back at someone who “took it too far.”
